First I want to say thanks to all the help I’ve gotten on this forum while working on my D6 8U. I got the dozer running last week but it doesn’t have the high rpm’s it had when we pulled it in the shed last fall. I took the back cover off the governor & discovered the spring appeared to be well below the grooves in the rod it coils around. I actually had to push the fuel rack open farther to left with a screwdriver to get enough fuel to start. I assume the spring may have slipped down & should be coiled completely over the grooved rod to allow full fuel rack movement. Traveling for work this week but I should have a D318 service manual in the mailbox at the house I ordered. Any input, suggestions? If there is anyone in eastern Nebraska who has knowledge of these old Cats & getting the governor set, please let me know. Thanks.

I personally cannot shed light on that, but I saw a u tube show on that. Squatch 253 did an excellent job explaining how this worked. Good luck

Yes, that doesn't look right. Different tractor but same basic design - my D2's spring is wound almost all the way up. Lengthening the stroke like that likely prevents the flyweights from going far enough out to permit the high idle rpm
