Hi Palmer,
32A is the equivalent of a 9U D6.
This D6 came from the States as a skid pack out to the ends of the final drive dead axle caps.
To qualify for an Australian Serial Number and, I believe import benefits, Cat of Australia built all the track frames and related undercarriage--yes, rollers, tracks, etc.
CofA also built the blades, etc. for these as well.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

I wonder if parts for these machines were also outsourced eg., to Steelweld who built many parts for the D4 30As?

But I think Cat had p'd them off by 1957-58.

Thanks for the info.

Edb, Would this mean that the 32a is a partial Australian built D6a or D6b?
I had thought that the D6A (8U-9U) was fully imported into this country or have I got this all wrong. Thanks for your advice.

Cheers
Geoff.

HI D6 32

I noted with interest your query regarding the Australian built D6 32A series tractors, they were built by Caterpillar in Australia - for two production years only - 1958 & 1959. and they built only 177 of these tractors. Hope that this puts your queries to rest.

Hi again,
any D6 with 8U-9U S/No would be imported intact fully built.
The 31A-32A is part OZ built as described above, and if I recall correctly was only known as a D6--no A or B etc. I believe the B did not come in until after the USA 37A-44A, Aust. 56A-57A, were built in 1959.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

These aussie track-frame,aussie assembled tractors came out late in the 9U, 8U series time,, and had the late 318 with a little more HP ,easely can be identified by the twin fan belts and larger CATERPILLAR print on side of block . Ive known of a fair few of them here in Qld. Always wanted one ,for that later 318.. They also a had a sharper bark, the pump was altered slitely ," spring& shimms", ive been told!...,, And if blades were fitted and they did hard work,, the aussie built diagonal-brace on trackfame would be bent and or plated with weld!!,,, ive never seen a US built Cat one welded -plated!!., the aussie diagonal brace had only a small hole in it (where the dirt sits} the US 9U has that big triangle hole for the dirt to fall thru. !.another way to see if its a 32A or 9U !,,,.. pete

Now that you lads have had a look at the machine, what do you all think of it?? Let me know what your thoughts are.
Is the price excessive for this type of machine in OZ?
Would parts still be available for undercarriage etc?

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
