In the process of changing the spin on fuel filter on the new to me D5, opening the air bleeder on top of the filter head and pumping the new hand pump i noticed that there is no drain line on the filter housing to bleed out the air ? i loosened the needle valve enough to bleed the system out past the threads but it seems to me there should be a drain line. before i pull out one of the plugged ports on the top of the filter head and install a drain line i thought i would run it past you guys, does it have an internal passage that shares the drain line for the transfer pump dump that might be plugged or did someone before me remove the elbow and line and put a plug in port because the needle valve was leaking and they were to lazy or cheap to replace it, or did cat do away with the line for some reason, my parts book does not show a line for the filter head assembly. the D333C doesn't seem to have much of an issue clearing out a little air after a filter change, so its not a huge ordeal to deal with it just seems a little odd to me.thanks in advance if anyone wants to enlighten me on this.

OM, yes that is the set up, ser # 98J415 i have the same photos in the books but the only drain line on this machine is under the acc housing to drain the transfer pump should the seal fail, i thought since there were no other external drain lines the filter housing might have a internal port that shares the same drain as the transfer pump, that may be plugged up in the filter head. before i take it apart to see for myself i was hoping someone had already come across this issue. thanks for the reply OM, i know in reading past post your not all that fond of the D333 engines and since this is my first time with one i will hold judgement on them until i spend a few days discing the hay fields with it, i've spent a lot of years on my 9U working ground so hopefully this D5SA will be a bit of an upgrade and the 9U will fall into a backup position.

There are a couple of versions of the fuel filter on the D333's, some had an angle valve on top of the filter housing with drain line connected to the valve itself?

OM, the needle valve is on the top of the filter head not angled there are two 1/8 inch pipe plugs on the backside top of filter head one of them might be the right port for the bleeder , it's odd that the maint manual says open bleeder and watch drain line till air bubbles stop but theres no line and the parts book shows the 1/8 inch pipe plugs but no elbow or line . kind of a mystery to me but not a big deal to fix. I let the air out past the threads on the bleeder with a rag rapped around it to catch the fuel , but thats prob not what cat intended.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
