Have a 94j d5 been sitting a year or two, can’t seem to get it to run. Have fuel to the pump, coming out at the injectors but won’t fire. Runs off ether but won’t take off on fuel like the rack is off. Could the rack be stuck and just pumping low pressure fuel to the injectors? Thank you

Hi Colton

,

from your description it sounds like the rack is stuck in the shut off position.

I believe that at D5 94J4482--up, these engines were fitted with the Sleeve Metering injection pumps (has a big plate/cover bolted to the side of its housing) instead of the cast housing Compact injection pump used previously on the D333C engines. To give more definitive data we need to know which Inj. pump you have fitted please.

The images attached show a sleeve metering pump and a compact pump to assist identification.

I do not know why I have two sleeve metering images loaded.

Regards,

Eddie B.

Removing the end cover will give you access to the rack...

having issues with posting text and images will try again later.

There is a small 2 bolt cover at the front end of the inj. pump on the accessory drive flange that allows access to the front end of the rack. Gently tap on the end of the rack and see if any stuck pumps come loose as evidenced by movement of said rack.

If you tap too hard you risk shifting any stuck plunger quadrant gears on their pump plungers.

It requires special knowledge and tooling to work on these units as it is difficult to re-time the quadrant gears to the rack with the rack held in the correct zero location as per image.

The torque for the pump nuts was revised to 120 lbs/ft as it was found the pump housings could split length ways.

Cheers,

Eddie B.
