I have a 2008 D4K that has a tappet noise after it is started and runs at idle after about 5 minutes. Could this be tappet noise? How do you adjust the tappets on this machine? The serial number is MMM00353.

I don't actually know, but the Duramax does NOT have hydraulic lifters. So it's possible it has mechanical lifters.

Parts book shows mechanical lifters.

Ironman 3406 are you still out there maybe you can answer my question about setting the lifters on a Cat D4K machine?

I'm surprised one can hear a tappet over the normal diesel noise. Are you sure it's not coming from combustion, ie timing etc..

not sure what it is. When the engine is started and left at idle for about 5 minutes the noise starts. It sounds like a metallic rattle that has a uniform rhythm cannot tell if the rhythm pickups in speed as the engine speed is increased as the engine noise drowns it out. The oil pressure is good at 60 psig. I noticed this noise after I had changed the oil. I am running 15W 40 Shell Rotella. I have not run this machine more than 8 hours so it may have been doing this before and just didn't notice it. The machine has only 2300 hours on it and I just finished rebuilding the undercarriage on it. I first thought it was the air conditioner compressor but I turned it off and the noise continued.

Are you sure it's not an injector? We bought a D6C cheap once because the engine was knocking real bad, turned out to just be a bad injector and has ran fine since.

I guess that is a possibility. I have a D7 17A that had an engine knock because of an injector pump but it was a really deep sounding knock. With this D4K being a higher RPM machine I am not sure what an injector would do in regard to noise? This noise is a high pitch metallic sound. I though it might be a lifter since this machine has mechanical lifters.

If I recall correctly, the mechanic that diagnosed ours just started cracking injector lines listening for a change in noise.

I will try that and see if it makes any noise change.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
