So I have a friend who has had a stroke and his health won't let him run his Cat anymore. I am clearing his fence rows for new fence building using his machine. At quitting time yesterday, I headed back towards my truck on the little D4H. I turned right and gave a small tree one more push into the pile, shifted into reverse, backed up and when I shifted back into forward... nothing. No forward, no reverse in any speed. Pulled the floor and the driveshaft is spinning. Oil is full and clean. Today I'll take a gauge in the woods and check pressures. Anyone else ran into this? No bang noise. Linkage is all in tact. Not how I wanted to spend the day.

i am not trying to belittle you but let me ask a dumb question. did you check the park brake? are there any safety interlock systems that stop the tractor if you fall out of the seat?

Hello frictionman, checking pressures is the way to go. I had a a similar problem on a D6D 4X years ago and the culprit was a broken spring in the valve body. The spring was less than $15.00 from Caterpillar but I lost 2 days work.

The park safety was the first thing I thought of because it acts exactly like it is on, but it is not and wasn't moved when it happened. The tracks freewheel when the engine is running. It's linkage is also in tact. Thanks for the mention though. The only dumb question is the one that didn't get asked, right?

I would take the back cover off the transmission and see if one of the clutch test ports has come out.

This will remain a mystery. Went back today with gauges, fired it up and dropped it into gear and it moves. Used it pretty hard for 2 hours without a hiccup. I like it when they fi themselves.

i googled "my caterpillar D4H just stopped" and found quite a few results with similar to your experience. also have come to the conclusion the D4H isn't a very popular machine. am i right? what is wrong with the D4H SERIES?

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
