I have the chance of a D4D (88a) with a blade & winch (my first Cat!!!) which appears mechanically good, however the track chains are worn (rollers worn in to the pin bosses) needs rollers and the sprockets also could do with replacing.
I priced up some non-oem parts and it almost comes to the value of the machine, that doesn't include my time + the fact I haven't got a puller to remove/replace the sprockets.
Bearing in mind I want the machine mainly for home on the farm what would you suggest I do, walk away from it or bite the bullet or look out for some second hand tracks?....what other machines use the same pitch?
I'm new to this game and a bit unsure what to do......suggestions please 😊

Hi Richard, You will probably have a job to find good used tracks, the D4D and D4E plus early 225 excavator and the later 215 (post 1983) used the same chains at a different length.
Try John Moore at Stafford and see if he can help, getting Finning out to pull and push sprockest will cost a bit.
There are others around who still possess pullers, see if you can locate your parts first, but most important of all, drain your final drives and see what you are letting yourself in for.

Hi Richard
Sorry i have not got my report to you yet, We had a soil screen delivered yesterday and i have been busy all day with it. We run a D4E and i think i may have chains that would need pinning abd bushing. By the way i think 941 chains are the same too. You can get service exchange rollers fro finning. Also i know someone with pulling gear, YES we have our own. Will try to get the report to you later. oil sample resaults maybe here today to.
Regards Gordon.

One thing i think to bear in mind with crawlers is to remember that the running gear is consumable, like bucket teeth like fuel. If the tractor doesnt get fed it cant work. although initial cost might make the tractor expensive it has a residual value with or without running gear.
Hello Catsilver hope you are well.

Hiya Gordon,

No problem, I appreciate your help in the first instance. It's a bit mad here too, harvest & some tractor repairs to get done before going back abroad.

Hello Catsilver, good to hear from you, thanks for the tips, I will give him a bell early next week for some ideas, in reality I reckon that IF I make a move on the machine, what with other work commitments, it's going to be early New Year before I get to doing anything on it.

Interesting point about the residual value, they seem to go down to like a fixed price and that is where they stay.....I did have a look thru Mascus web site to see what they make abroad and it's still reasonable money and to be honest once they have had a coat of paint and the nec. repairs doing it would 'sppear' they can still do a fair day's work regardless of the age.

Yes I'm keeping well thanks Gordon, just had the 'Bus pass' birthday but don't intend to retire until I have to, I don't have the pulling gear to keep myself busy on old machines or I might do.
Your right, the 941 used D4 U/C but you have to be careful, there were a couple of part number changes, the chains fit but early and late D4 chains have different size pad bolts.
The D4D was a sound machine, the D4E is little different, they are still capable of doing a good days work and are simple to understand although the hydraulic press gear required for sprockets, pinion flanges and clutches can be a bind unless you know someone who has the tools.
Richard, are you the guy who used to work for Alex Sim?

Hello Martyn,

thanks for that.....Whimple would be nice & handy......what do Curwoods do? track re-furbs?....(edit: I just googled him and got nothing, what does he trade under?)

Will let you know how it pans out.

I am guessing here but I would imagine that ideally/technically you would need to replace the sprocket AND the chain because of the wear patterns already formed in the mating surfaces.

Out of interest anyone got an exploded parts diagram of what the final drive assy looks like?

Also, one last point, was rummaging around on e-bay looking for service manuals etc. for an 88A series.....no-one seems to keep them, is there anything else of that vintage that would be the same?

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
