I have had an early D4D 78AXXX for about 10 or12 years. Not sure about parts avalability , I haven't needed anything but filters. I don't use it very much, easy tractor to run, would buy it again. Allmost forgot ,broken rods or crank pistons should not all be at bottom.
Evolution of the 78A.....![]()
Looked it over. Looks like a new set of tracks and chain would be in order. Does appear to have the forward and reverse lever on far right of cab. That does not seem to move. (Don’t know about this so maybe it has to be running. Right brake froze. Steering clutches do actuate and all linkages move. Left brake moves but doesn’t spring back. Transmission group number is 4k503. Serial number is 78a5673. Transmission does shift as it should in the center and right quadrant. Far left quadrant I could not get it to go into gear without pushing harder...which I did not do. Head is off. Cylinder 4 seams to have metal on sleeve... I could not scrape it off with my finger nail. Other three sleeves seem reasonable and have pb blaster sitting in them. What does the rest of the machine look like? Engine is a D330A - 4-1/2" bore. Why was it torn down?
If machine appears beat up check for cracks in the main frame to steering clutch case mounting, otherwise doesn't seem too far gone. If it needs undercarriage scrap price less transport cost would be in order.
Machine not too bad looking. Motor was stuck. Head removed. Other than tracks most of tractor has good original paint. Will check if cracks exist. Offered $750
I have a D330A industrial engine, complete, running take-out best I remember. Just barred it over freely.

Are you sure all pistons are on the bottom of the stroke? It looks to me that two maybe going down and two coming up and they are at the crossover point.
That I need to verify but that’s what I’m now thinking
