Well, this is getting to be fun. I went to town and went looking for bushings for the handles last week. Then I went looking for drill bits and the local hardware store doesn't carry anything over 1/2 inch any longer. So taking into account the cost of drill bits and the time spent playing with the handles, I asked about a local machine shop.
$70 later and one handle was brazed, both repaired back to round and a set of bearings installed in one handle.
Now comes the fun part of trying to twist the adjustment clevis on the steering cables which connect to the bottom of the handle. They are both frozen.
I guess the acetylene torch will get pulled out.

Once the handles are on, the Caterpillar 54 winch cable will be next. I figure 200 feet of 3/4 inch cable with a open spelter socket on the end. That will get the drum about 75% full and using 5/8 inch chokers, I figure damaging the main cable will be minimal.
Any other ideas for how to loosen the clevis?

200 ft????? as I posted earlier The #54 winch capacity is 168 FT. You don't want to run full capacity unless you like bird nests.

If your old, I must be decrepit. Your right. 168 feet. So just to keep myself entertained, I will be going down to 160 feet of 3/4 inch. Figuring to always use 5/8 chokers, I anticipate the main cable should last a few years.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
