I have a D4D that belongs to a neighbor and he was told all serial numbers had been removed. He has owned this machine for 30yrs and never known what year it was. The other day while i was using it the main spring ,equalizer spring I believe they call it slipped out of bracket on left side . It appears to have been broken off a long time ago and has been wearing the tip till it finally came out of place. Anyway back to serial number, having had a old D7 17a ,and a d46u that i recently sold I remebered the serial number being stamped on frame rail next to engine on left side, so under several coats of old yellow paint i found what i believe to be the serial numbers 78A 1273 . Any one know what year and if this is the serial number. The machine has what i call shuttle shift ,on left side arm rest has forward and reverse which both have low and run positions. i need to find a replacement spring for it . As i borrowed it and want it fixed when I return it ,and wont works as it is.all help appreciated . If i knew how i would post pictures .

Here are the instructions for equalizer spring removal.

Seems you could just drop the spring after pulling the pin and jacking the tractor high enough but it does have to turn to get it out.

Not sure how successful weld repairs to the spring would be.

Thanks again , I have 4of the outside bolts off and was thinking there must be more inside frame rail as is still not moving . I was thinking if I can t find the main leaf of the spring I could weld the tapered end that slipped out and maybe get more use out of it , rather find a replacement but cost and time also a factor . The end of spring is worn to a sharp angle 45degrees or more and let it slip out . The pad it rest on is also worn down and is at least a inch shorter than right side and very thin and sharp. that also will get a new pad welded in . Also have to fix the roller that mounts on top of rail and hold track up in the center ,when everything let go the roller tore out of mount ,looks as though only one bolt was still holding other 3 rusted away .

Welding up the spring pad and retainer bracket is not the problem. It's dealing with the spring which I am sure is a heat treated item.

I can't find my 78A parts manual to help with the search for replacement.

Still can't find my 78A parts book but the prior model 20J and the next after the 78A model which is a 82J use the same equalizer spring #4K8947. Fits several models.

Thanks Dan and old Magnet , Iwas thinking of getting it out and going to a spring shop in Tampa Ihave used for years on my Dump trucks and semi . to see if they can make a bottom leaf for this also. really don t want to weld it and still have to worry with it ,Rather fix it right once and be good for many more hours. Its not my machine and owner doesn t use it very often and wont sell it to me but has let me use it when ever i need it,and since my stroke and selling off my D7 17a and my D46u. I appreciate him trusting me to use the old cat. sure miss not seeing my own cats sitting where they were for years . Have a wedding to attend this weekend but will be back at it with help of my brother in law come monday,he is my muscle now ,lol.actually a old army tank maintaince sgt .so the cats aren t out of his expertise.

Problem is that's not just a flat spring, it is a tapered cross section, not that it couldn't be replaced by a multi leaf unit.

The serial number is not clear but looks like: 2p4426.
I would like to identify this machine, so need help with the serial number(see picture)
This machine is in Mozambique africa and is in fantastic nick. It was done up and then after run in just left to sit for 23 years. Missing a hydraulic pump...but the opening was blocked off. Oil in it is brand new.
I am really exited it turns over fine but I have not started it up yet.
Could someone help with a link to a parts manuel pls
