New member here, hoping to find some info about the family D4D. We have had this tractor for 20+ years, and was told it came from Hawaii before my dad purchased it from the dealer. Serial number is 84J796.

I have always had a hard time finding any info about these tractors, and we only have the parts book for it. My dad has always wanted just a little more power out of it as we can’t pull our 12 foot disc and roller in 4th gear, it lugs the engine a little too much. Some old timers have said to add a turbo, but we have never found any info about a factory turbo version of the early d330 engine, is this possible?

That's a nice looking D4D. Maybe John Gardner aka Mr. D4e himself could chime in about it; he has a LOT of knowledge running D4 tractors. He had a custom weed abatement/disking service in SoCal prior to retirement.
My 84J with non turbo engine will pull a 10-12' drag disk, drag and roller in 4th okay depending on soil conditions. Most folks around here always ran in 3rd in the orchards, and the large land owners would have 4th and 5th shift gates welded shut.
The 84J I own with the 70P turbocharged 3304 engine is a whole different animal. It will run with ease, 18' drag disks with rollers in 5th gear (special application machine).
I was under the impression that the 330 came mainly in the 78A series machine.
***note the Z prefix stamped on the tag; to this day, nobody can tell us why/what that stamp is for!***
Post some more pics please, I LIKE that machine. Thx, JM

The 84J796 is a 1969 machine with D330C engine (4-3/4" bore) same as the later 3304
Engine HP normally aspirated is 90 hp for either engine.
The D4E SA tractor 3304 with turbo puts out 107 engine hp.
Adding a turbo requires piston oil cooling jets which the D330C may or may not have provision for.

Welcome to the group. Hopefully some come forward with the information you are looking for.

Antidotal information, so it is worth what it is costing you. Back in the day of big companies farming sugar in Hawaii, they used a lot of crawler tractors. There was a used parts place in the Fontana Calif area (east of LA) that specialized in AC crawler parts got a lot of AC tractor out of Hawaii. So, tractors going over and back was not unheard of.

Here’s a few old photos I have from 2012 prepping to plant a new Vineyard

And the most recent time I used it in 2020, closing behind the fumigation tractor.

@Ray54 sending tractors over to Hawaii is still happening today, the dealership my brother used to work for in Stockton just sent a whole group of new Magnum and Steiger tractors over last year.

We have been looking for a D6D SA with a cab for several years but a nice one commands a good price still. We actually happened upon a Challenger 45 instead, has about 7000 hrs and the undercarriage and tracks had been done recently so we bought that instead. Little different driving one compared to the old steel tracks.

OM: Thank you for the information, as usual, you are helping immensely. I am curious when the 84J made the change over to the 3304. 84J1284? has the 330C I believe, and my favorite, the D4D SA 84J2281? has the 3304 with factory turbo.
Nice photos Anthony, I miss being part of the farming here often; but then again, glad that I am not tied down to it. Hats off to all the hard working full time growers out there!
I bet it is hard to go back to driving the open station tractors with that Challenger 45 available. It probably has a nice AC unit and stereo sound. My own experience was with a rental unit from ATI, an early 65. Fun to drive, some folks can't seem to get the hang of one I've been told.
I might have to bore some and share a few of my own photos. Keep 'em coming please. Thanks, JM

So I see the D330C is the larger displacement same as the 3304, but its rated hp is at 1680rpm, where the 3304 is rated at 2200rpm? Would it be possible just to increase the rated rpm on mine by adjusting the governor?

You need to go by the actual Rack Setting Charts....
84J0621 to 84J1612 have the same specs...
Full load RPM = 2000
High idle = 2160
Rack setting -.020
Same 90 hp
Not until sleeve metering did things slightly change High idle being 2130, rack setting 4.10mm.
Still the same 90 hp.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
