Hi everyone,

Does anyone know if the starting engine on a 1965 D4D 78A series (2 cylinder vertical on the right hand side) can be taken out without having to remove the governor and fuel pump? As well, we have a 40MT starter with the proper helix drive but does anyone know the correct thickness of the spacer plate / adapter that fits between the starter nose cone and the flywheel housing? Lastly, it is almost a shame to take the starting engine out as it works really well but does anyone have any interest in buying a good running starting engine? We also purchased the pre-combustion chambers and glow plugs so we are hoping the conversion should work well well once finished. We are located in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Thanks in advance for everyone's help!
Andy

Yes it will come out quite easily but it is a heavy little sod you will need some lifting gear. It does not need to go forward very far to clear. Worst part probably getting the cooling pipes and exhaust removed. I would like a good spare but postage to Aus is a bit too much.

That adapter plate is somewhat of a mystery. I have not actually held one in my hand to investigate but I understand it has an offset hole to adapt the then current direct electric starter to the flywheel housing. What makes it even more confusing is that some folks have indicated that using a later drive end housing allows match up without the spacer adapter. Maybe there is a possible conclusion to be had from this installation or if someone knows already the information would be appreciated.

I replaced the starting motor on a D4C with a direct electric starter.Had 12 volt system so used a 12v 40MT starter.Never needed an adapter, simple bolt in installation.Starter and 4D battery cost around $400,very simple and cheap.Kroll Machine in Colfax Wa. supplied the starter ready to mount.Would assume a D4D and D4C would be similar but I don't know.

Does anyone actually have this starter with the 9M7202 drive end housing and the 1M0023 adapter? I suspect an odd ball drive end housing that is short by the thickness of the adapter and a smaller DEH diameter. Not sure about the offset but that's what I've been led to believe.

59a 922b loader D320 engine shows the adapter on the starter. Looks like it is intended as a spacer, but cannot tell about the concentricity.

The later D330c and D333 use a reducer/spacer to mount the electric starter. The spacer bolt pattern is a lot bigger than the starter bolt pattern.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

The D330c and D333c use the one piece drive end housing without the adapter. It's the later D7's. 8s and 9s that have the large bolt pattern requiring an adapter or the special drive end housing with the larger bolt circle diameter.

Thank you for everyone's replies. We ended up having to pull the governor and fuel pump off to get the pup engine out. Man, that pup was a tight fit in there.

As for the spacer plate on the starter, we will take some measurements of the ring gear and starter drive and see what is required. We'll report back once we get it figured out.

Thanks again,
Andy

I'm curious if this is the same adaptor as the 1M0023 mentioned. Different part number on this one though.
This is off a D330.

I suspect it is very similar to the 1M0023, just has an extra lug to make it dual bolting pattern.
