I have a 1965 D4D 78A series that has the small two cylinder vertical starting engine that sits on the right hand side of the motor and I would like to convert to direct electric start. I already have the different precumbustion chambers with glow plugs to swap out with what is on the motor as well as a Delco 40MT starter. I have read a lot about the older 5U, 7U and 9U series conversions but have not noticed anything on the newer series. What I would like to know is what starter drive, starter housing and adapter plate (if any) I would need to mount everything up and where it can be purchased from. I appreciate your help! By the way, if anyone is interested in the starting engine, send me a message as it is in very good condition.
Thank you!

It's the same set up as shown in your parts book for direct electric start except you need to change the drive to the LH helix drive gear (not RH). The factory offset adapter plate is required.
Can get both the drive and adaptor from:

See if you can catch "ol grump" on the BB....he just did a conversion on a D333 recently. (same drill)

I've never worked on that new of a dozer but as far as the conversion on a Cat 12E motor grader, the hardest part was getting the old pony out single handedly. Putting the new starter on was easy, I got a used adapter out of Portland OR and used an MT 50 starter due to cost. My major screwup was not realizing it needed a LH helical gear to begin with. .that's where the fun began😆 Once I got the proper gear, everything fell into place.

As far as the rest of it, wiring, etc I bought some 2/0 cable and terminals, built a battery box for 2 12 volt batteries, wired the original start button to the solenoid and now that I've got everything straightened out, it's a dream. I also built a "quick start" ether injection setup and now it's hit the starter button for 8-10 seconds (to build oil pressure), kick the throttle, quick push on the ether injection and it rumbles right to life. I'm waiting on winter now to see how well it works when the weather gets cold but as easy as it starts now, I don't see any problems.
