I know this is a newer tractor, but I bought a D4c Series II which has a direct drive transmission. I bought an operator's manual from Cat, using the serial number, but the manual does not mention direct drive. Does anyone know the correct oil for the transmission? Thanks for your help.

If the steering clutches and transmission oil is combined I would say 30W or 50W Cat transmission drive train oil. For oil clutch 30W Cat TDO oil.

The s/n is 7KG115, I believe. Don't have it in front of me, but pretty sure. It was a Georgia Forest Service tractor originally, so it was probably a special order. Sort of unusual setup, in my experience, at least. It has a clutch foot pedal on the left for the main clutch, and a brake pedal in the middle. Steering is all with the hand clutches, including the track braking. For my use, which is mostly plowing fire lines, plus a little light clearing work, it is ideal. It also has a winch on the front, which I had not seen before, either.

i had one like that once. it basically is a powershift tractor without a torque converter but rather a hydraulic lockup clutch. if i remember it took 30weight TO2 oil but you should confirm.

D46U straight blade,D46U cat angle blade,allis chalmers AD4 grader and Khoering 404 dragline. D4C 40A,D4 2T and scraper.

7KGxxxx is listed as a PowerShift, 3F/3R, Planetary transmission, wet clutches and brakes, 2-pedal steering and foot operated decelerator, three valve hydraulics, single lever dozer control. That s/n would be 1991 production.
Alternate configurations of steering and brakes would be listed as Attachments in the Parts Manual which I don't have.

So you have a gear shifter between your feet and a forward reverse lever under the steering levers ? Either PS or DD power train uses 30 wt. drive train oil.

Check that s/n again. Seems you are referring to one of the Special Application units.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
