Hello everyone

Great forum you guys have here!

I have been trawling the internet for a while now trying to match up a series of numbers for our dozer.

We are in Australia and we are trying to track down a starter motor for the pony motor on a D4C 55A224. (We call it a donkey motor)

Now, the trouble is, we have contacted almost everyone and our numbers are not lining up. Every the Caterpillar reps say that is not a valid serial number and they need another one. That number is what is stamped on the plate on the left side of the engine.

I found this thread
http://www.acmoc.org/bb/showthread.php?26284-D4C-55A-manuals
It seems there are corresponding serial numbers? Is there another sort of serial number or is that the only possible one?

We have contacted Tilly's but it seems that the D4C came with different starting configurations and I'm at a loss as to how to narrow down a part number. There is nothing on the starter motor itself but there is a number on the pony motor.

Would anyone be able to help narrowing down a number to pass onto Caterpillar? Or know where to look on the dozer to find the "right" serial number?

Thanks
Ben

Mate , Hopefully Eddie {EDB} Will be along ,and able to help.As you saw in that old thread ,he is able to make sense of the serial numbers . i believe d4cs had what was refereed to as a buzz bomb pilot motor .They revved high , and self destructed .. I think Member here Wimmera Farmer has a D4C with Buzz bomb .

The UK and States equivalent machines were the 24A and 40A, but beware, I think there was an interim model built with the earlier U series engine in the far east, a photo would help a lot.

The D4C 55A is equivalent to the US 40A series. The pony starter motor assembly is # 8H1543 (12V). I'm have difficulty determining the Delco part number??.

Just curious, why keep the buzzbomb?I went through two of them on my 40A,then changed to direct start.I believe it cost me around $400.Best move I ever made.Too bad you aren't closer as I have a complete buzzbomb I'd make you a deal on(has a hole in the side).

Hi Team,
said machine, D4C 55A 0224, is the same as a USA built D4C 24A 0324.
For service and parts books etc. look for ones that suit D4C 24A 1-up.

To clarify Aussie machines :-
55A1 to 55A199 are equivalent of the USA built 40A 1-up.
55A 200-up are equivalent of the UK built 24A 1-up.

My poor photocopy sheets of Aussie built machines equivalent serial numbers do not copy well enough to scan and load here.

Cheers,
Eddie B.

Guys,

First of all Thank you! What amazing replies and so quick. I believe this will help us out a a lot.

EBD, thank you!
It is interesting as the serial number plate does say made in GB.
This is the plate. The hard to read bit on the top says made in GR Britain

And either side of the machine

I can take some more detailed photos if this helps? Just tell me what you need

In response to why keep the buzz bomb? Well, Tilly's quoted us $2000 for a direct start conversion. I thought that was a bit excessive. Does anyone know of another place in Australia that could help with this sort of stuff?

Once again thank heaps!
Ben

Hi OM,
you are indeed correct (now that I have double checked my S/No index) about the 24A being a UK S/No, and I have copied the 24A straight from my Equivalent S/No pages and me assuming USA origin base machine, as was the norm, until Leicester came on line.
I feel the change in Equivalent base machine S/No prefixes at 55A 0200 would explain a change of source of the machine's base unit being used.
We did receive UK built machines here so it is feasible that UK chassis were sent and fitted with Aussie built under carriage etc. to get the Made In Australia content to the required level to qualify as Australian built.

Thanks again OM.
Best Regards,
Eddie B.

There is a bloke in Towoomba that does direct electric start conversions for about half price of Tillys. John Davis auto electrical is their name I reakon, I bought a direct electric start kit from him for D7 17A if I remember correctly. If not try Brad at Toowoomba earthmoving, he sells the kits also and may have spare pilot motor parts.

$2000 is a lot excessive.I purchased my starter from a small machine shop near me that did a lot of direct start conversions. The rebuilt 12V starter I bought from them was around $140 15 years ago.The only other major expense was a 4D battery for $120.I used the original charging system and the starter bolted right in and took only a few hours to do everything. You could probably rig up your own starter if you know the right drive gear.I believe the starter was a 40MT.
