I'm looking for advice everywhere I can. Need to renew the rod bearings in my 7u. The "proper" bearings are the grooved $55.00 set, but hey also offer a smooth bearing at $13.00. Being cheap I was wondering if the smooth bearing will work or is the grooved bearing ( it's a trough really) required due to engine design.

Hi Bret4207,
I suggest you put in the same style bearings as is now fitted. If you have the grouved set, either at the top and bottom or just the top--if I recall correctly--as the journal will have a unworn ridge around it from the grouved bearings and if you fit the plain bearings they could likely overload and fail as all the load is carried on the ridge area only and not on the full available area.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Thanks Eddie, but the "groove" is more of a gullet, it's doesn't go clear around the bearing. I'm wondering if there any way to know when the change was made.

Bret,
According to my parts book, Form UE032504, it shows two bearings running from 7U1 to 7U20128, 7U20131, 7U20139 to 7U201141, 7U20143, 7U20145, 7U20147, 7U20149 and 7U20151 inclusive. Oddly enough, this is for the same crankshaft 3F6777 as the bearings for 7U20129, 7U20132 to 7U20139, 7U20142, 7U20144, 7U20146, 7U20148, 7U20150 and 7U20152 up. Why the "mix and match" is anyone's guess. .I'd say to get the ones for your own S/N machine to be safe.
