Hey everyone, I'm wondering if someone could post a diagram that shows where the oil plug is for the diesel engine on a D47U and also where the new oil goes in. It would be very much appreciated.

Sorry, don't have a diagram and the ones I have seen are pretty basic, simply pointing to a general area on a drawing of the machine.

I suggest crawling under the tractor and familiarize yourself with the underside. It helps to park over a swale in the ground or if in the shop etc drive up on some timbers (RR ties etc) to gain some clearance. Try to leave the tractor sitting level, CAT designed it to drain out completely and the oil to run out the holes in the crankcase guard / belly pan without making a huge mess as long as it is sitting reasonably level.

Do you have the special wrench for the drain plugs? Plugs have a hex socket that a 1-1/8" hex (standard 3/4" bolt) will fit in. You can weld a nut on the end of a bolt of a convenient length and use it to reach up through belly pans if you have them. This also allows you to use a ratchet or bar on a 1-1/8" socket to turn it, but a wrench will do the job.

Oil fill is a flip cap on right side of engine close to dipstick and crankcase breather. Should have a spring wire to keep it closed.

Have fun!
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

thanks for the info ccjersey, everything was where it was supposed to be! There's a new problem/issue though, this time with the starter flywheel (the one with the arrow on it). It seems to be stuck, and won't move no matter what I try to do. I can move the fan, but not the starter flywheel. The starter and everything else is in great shape (I've replaced and fixed so many things that at this point I have an almost new machine!), so I'm not sure what it could be. Less than a month ago it was spinning just fine. Any ideas on what to try next? Thanks!

First thing is open the petcocks on the cylinder heads of the pony motor to make sure there is no liquid in the cylinders.

If nothing there, then try shaking the pony flywheel back and forth. I have seen the starter drive get jammed and lock one up. Usually you can slip the belt a little though, so may not be your problem. Could loosen the belt to make sure what is locked up, starter drive or crankshaft.
