Hi all,

Just wondering what you guys think of these mains out of my 112 2M609. The main journals are within specs but the babbitt on two of the bearings has eroded. What should I do? I talked to a few people about re-babbitting but that would cost a small fortune at around $1500.00 for all rods and mains. Has anyone ever bored these bearing shells and fitted them with inserts? Is this a good idea or not? Maybe I should just put them back in the way they are, but that to me seems like a "half job". What do you guys think?
Thanks, Dean

That's an absolutely classic picture of babbitt bearing erosion caused by acids formed in the engine from combustion by-products .. or too high detergency oil. I have never seen an example so bad.

Cat changed over to aluminum bearings sometime in the 40's .. but I can't find the info again on just when .. even though I came across it recently.
I can't see any reason why you couldn't replace the babbitt bearings with aluminum type. The aluminum type bearing was regarded as a major upgrade to the engines, with vastly improved bearing life.

Hi Team,
the SM is Nov. 29 1946. I do not have an actual copy but a Reprint Edited version from the "Selected Service Magazine Articles-- 1932-1950" booklet Form No 3094. Page 53.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Thanks for the replies. Tomorrow I'm going to check with the place that jmvmopar suggested. If anyone has ever modified these shells to accept bearing inserts from another engine such as the D320 that has the same size crank journals as the D4400, I would like to hear about it. Thanks again, Dean

I did call cat on rod bearings they said $100 per journal. I didn't even ask for main bearing prices after that.

Eddie - Thanks for the pointer to the article. I have a big missing gap in my SM's between 1946 and 1949, which is annoying .. but I have several copies of the "Selected Service Magazine Articles 1932-1950". That must have been where I saw it.
