Guys, it has been a long time coming, I had to put newer rails, sprockets, (and in the process of taking off the blade to haul, I broke a hydraulic line) so I rebuilt all of them, a local collector was able to help with the old style CAT fittings/couplers so I just got it all hooked up today. Here are the pictures. Nothing is painted, but it runs good, no leaks, etc.

This is a 1946 D4 6U, it has a #41 CAT hydraulics, rear two speed pto, elec pony. I have an original battery box, lights, and hope to have the new wiring harness, lights, etc. all hooked up and ready to go for the Lathrop, MO show in June.

Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Nice tractor! 1947 was the first year for the 6U and 7U tractors.

Looking at the angle of lift, I would bet that the Subsoiler hangs straight when buried in the ground!
Which would make it appear tilted in when raised up.
Same as a Dozer blade sitting square on the ground but tilted back when it is raised up!

It does need to be adjusted because the angle of the shank is constant relative to the draught arms, so when they're down, the angle will be even more acute relative to the ground. Michael will need to adjust the shank so it's roughly 90 degrees to the draught arms, and then fine tune it once it's at working depth. (At least, this is all based on what my eyeballs are telling me : )

MIKE, get the toolbar operators manual if you don't have it already for CORRECT settings and operation. MOST important is operation of tools is always done with spool in FLOAT position. I note that ur tractor like mine was converted to 41 hydraulics with a fender tank seat. according to the 41 instruction manual this wasn't possible or allowed, only seat tank seat used. I guess dealers like farmers had their own ideas. I note the heavier no.4 brackets with new 7/8" bolts, nice. over time the shin willget bent, u should weld to standard. farm cats rule!

On further reflection, I'm sure that when the hydraulic control is in float position, you can adjust the depth somewhat by the angle of the shank to the draught arms, just like a moldboard plow

I was so happy to get it all together that I did not make any adjustments. I centered the toolbar only to find out the subsoiler is off centered a couple inches. The pitch screw adjusters are both free and I will need to adjust before putting in the ground. I am also going to have to find a Clevis with a wide opening but only a 5/8ths bolt to attach the mole. Thanks for your comments. Michael

don't loose that mole! u should talk to joman about the rated hardware that thing requires. $$$ forged stuff, more than the mole itself. good luck.

Mike how do I get in touch with joman? I don't intend to use it much but would like to put it in the ground once. Michael

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
