recently bought an aftermarket thermostat from a company for my d4
it actually had detroit stamped on it, but i didnt think much of it at the time.

i checked it before i put it in the machine and it was not opening up till about 94 degrees celsius (201 farenheit)
does anybody know if detroit two strokes run hotter then conventional 4 stroke diesels, or is this simply a faulty thermostat.
thanks.

I just bought a new Tridon thermostat for my D4 7J yesterday because I found the Cat. one's I'd bought were opening too hot, like at 195F, and it was suggested something around 180F would be more appropriate for the older diesels, so the one I got is Tridons TT410-180, it cost around $34 and is no doubt made in China for 73 cents, the one I bought for my 22 looks identical, but is a few mm bigger, it's TT304-170, that one costs $57, don't ask me why it's more expensive, but I had no choice, I needed one that opens at 170F and it needs to fit into the water manifold. The Part Number for the D4 7J regulator is 8B8018, you might want to cross check against your D4 6U part number, I'd be thinking they are the same?
Good luck

Thanks for the info Mike.

I have been chasing one for the D4 and D2 as well.

I scored a US made one on Ebay - old stock out of Canada - but I need another. So the Tridon one looks like the way to go temperature opening wise.

G,day. Just for information, Cat went through and upped all there thermostat opening temperatures in the early 1980's by a couple of .C to reduce valve guide and bore wear due to less crankcase gases condensing in the oil and probably some other reasons as well

Interesting info there, thanks, what bugs me is Tridon claim to be an Australian company, but neither the package or the thermostat say where they are made, so I'm assuming China, and no doubt the same thing is available from NAPA Auto Parts in the USA for $13.75, about all they are worth. I've bought three Cat. thermostats over the past couple of years and all open at 195F.

For the cat 63mm, 180f thermostat I have a current number of 4N0236, I bought a couple from Regal a couple years ago, they are out now, look like a standard automotive type, they are stainless and copper and made in the USA, couple bucks each. It is the 5h9740, 2b2570, 8B8018 replacement, uses the 4f7390 o ring to become the 6h1694 replacement group.

Many thanks for that info Josh, it just confirms we are getting stitched on those thermostats here in Oz, I'll need to buy some from NAPA and get them sent to Florin Tractor Parts to go in with my next order. Can you please do me another favor Josh, can you give me a aftermarket Regal or NAPA part number for a 170 or 175F thermostat that is 67 or 68mm wide to fit in my 22, and also a 170 or 175F thermostat 62 or 63mm wide to fit my 15.
many thanks

Mike,
I did not have much luck finding the thermostats you want, A Murray 15467, is a 160 degree, 62-63mm thermostat, and a 160 degree 67-68mm range is a Murray 3586. I did find some listings.

No information from this company on temps and Stant company and others, seems to want to keep their product information a secret, not sure about that as a marketing strategy. If anyone could come up with some information on these companies products especially the Stant thermostats, that would be a great help.
My Napa dealer was pretty useless, and high priced, only way they would look anything up was by application, couldn't cross any of the numbers I have, they had heard of a D4. but that was about as far as they could narrow it down.

Thanks for your help Josh, I really appreciate it, I assumed there would be hundreds of aftermarket options available in the USA for those sizes, my gut feeling is 160F is a bit too low for my old gas Cats and way too low for the diesels, but I'm sure one of our real Mechanics will chime in.

G'day If your cooling system is in reasonable condition I would be looking at 85.C or 185.F as opening temp and I think that is about what Cat where using in the 1980's

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
