I have just purchased an old D4 with factory electric start. It has a rear mounted winch, which covers the serial number plate. is there any other location on the machine that would have the serial number? I was told by previous owner that he believed it to be a late model 7U, but that was only what he was told when he bought it several years ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi,
As well as the serial number being on the rear top left hand side of the transmission case, in your case (no pun intended) being covered by the winch, there is also an aluminium serial number tag on the left hand side rear top of the engine cylinder block. If you can't see the aluminium tag, there should be two small rivets where the tag was attached and the serial number should be stamped into the metal between the two tags.
On an original machine, the two serial numbers are the same. Often one finds that the engine serial number is different to that on the transmission case, indicating that the machine has been re-engine at some point in the past.

Thanks for the response, but no sign of ever having had a plate in that area on the engine. I removed the batteries for a clear view of both the head, and block, then cleaned the whole area well, but nothing found. If anyone has a photo, or any more info on this I'd sure like to hear from you. Thanks again!

Thanks. I guess its possible that that tag is hidden behind one of the solenoids on my rig. I'll head back out for another look. I had been looking on the rear of the engine, facing what would be the backside of the instrument panel, or firewall.

Don't overlook the obvious. The Hyster book tells you to remount the tags to the right side of the dash panel. On late tractors the holes are pre-drilled at Cat

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
