I am going to replace the radiator on the D4 7U33999 it has the oil cooler radiator. The oil cooler is shot and has been looped for a long time, from what i read this is acceptable on this model.(also it would be easy to add one in front of the rad. if deemed necessary later)

The question is can i use a full width core with my tanks? I looked in the parts book and it seems like it would work to me but i wanted to check your collective experience before i made this decision.

Another thing is some on pulled the thermostat some time ago. probably plugged or stuck some time.

I recently performed a recore on a 212 grader which has the D311 engine. It too had a bad oil cooler. After reviewing the parts book and posts on this topic I came to the same conclusion as you. I had a local radiator shop rebuild with a full width core. The threaded plugs and copper washers are still available from Caterpillar, for blocking the oil cooler lines. I am very pleased with the changeover. The total cost was a bit pricy, the recore alone was near $960. I would recomend installing the temp regulator, it is important that a diesel engine operate at 180 to 195 degrees F. Dale

Somebody just posted here on the BB, or over on ACME two or three weeks ago about getting a brand new core for their Cat delivered to their door for around $300, or $350, I paid $850 here in Australia a year ago for a new alloy core for my 2 Ton and I thought that outrageous. Check back through the posts here, or someone smarter than me will find it for you.
You must have the themostat in place, I've pulled two D4 radiators now and both were missing their thermostats.

I got a new heater core shipped to my door from general radiator in Chicago. It was just over $300. That core was for a PV15. They have a website and I found them very helpful and easy to work with. Just my 2 cents.

I am going to get a thermostat ordered up from cat or regal i now need an injector (must have messed it up pulling it in and out so many times). I think the reason the stat is missing is the rad. got bad, over heated, blew head gasket, and some one removed the thermostat....

thanks for the core sources i am going to call cat, rocore, general rad., regal and maybe florin. i will post my results with prices and shipping.

My parts book shows 7h677 for the core but i saw someone listed it as 7h0677 is this up dated?

thanks,

I had a beautiful full width core out of a 5T in my 7U. It fit perfectly. Recently the lock came off the fan and the nut came off and the fan took out my beautiful radiator. Now I am going to have to replace it with the narrow oil cooler type.

For people interested on my pricing luck:
cat- discontinued
florin- not avail.
regal- not avail.
American crane - 650 shipped to WI
rocore WI- 450-500
general rad. chicago- 360 + 60 for shipping, gaskets, brass/copper 3 core, sounds good, in stock, made in IL,

I have the general ordered i'll let you know how it turns out, i thought i would have the rad. out tonight but that loader frame makes removing that 44 pump unbelievable! whatever engineer invented that mounting never touched a wrench.

I was just quoted $US1,000 -$2,000 to fabricate a new core for my D2 4U by Aussie Desert Coolers, this company was recomended by a fellow member who got a core for about $500 or $600 from them only a few years ago!
I wonder how much it would cost to ship a core to Australia?

Got my new core. Looks good to me but I am no expert.I is differnt than the orignal in the following: The headers are blank (I need trim and drill them out for bolts), 3 rows and same number of tubes but staggered and 1/2" tubes instead of 3/4", this mean the core is appx. 1/2-3/4" thinner, it did come with bolts and a roll of gasket (still ordering gaskets from cat) full width/ no oil cooler. All said I think it is going to work great if I do a good job. Assembling.

Does any one use permatex or anything when assembling the rad.

At the Cat dealer for years where I worked I used permatex on lots of gaskets and yes in your case it would be a good idea to use it. Get the black #2 permatex as that is non-hardening type and works the best esp. around where there is coolant. When tightening bolts even on anything work from the center out to the sides so you don,t have a leak later from it not pulling down flatly.Don,t tighten bolts tight the first time around but start out partly tightening them and work it up to the finished tighteness in steps.

I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
