I just purchased a D4 cat with a Trackson shovel on it, it set for 18 years. Pony motor was stuck, I was able to free it up with penetrating oil, but wouldn't turn over all the way, instead of forcing it I pulled the heads to find one cylinder was full of rust, water jackets in cylinder and heads was also full of rust, flushed out everything except there is a small hole in bottom of head that lines up with hole in block, one side is open to water jacket the other isn't and seams like the casting is solid. Now question I have is this a problem or is it important, the two big ports on each side of the cylinder have flow.

Im soaking the heads on hydrochloric acid, the hole can't be drilled in the head any more it goes around a corner. The hole in the block I drilled in about 1 inch and then it got hard like I was going thru cast iron. I don't know if this is a common problem.

Maybe I should clarify, the 4 main oblong holes are open now with good flow between each with a garden hose.its just the 3/8 in hole under the cylinder that has the problem

You might have to poke a hard, bent scratcher in there to knock it down. Once it's open some, the rest should crumble out more easily.

It may take some creative scratching to clean out the hole. I have put them in an oven before to help break up the rust.

I'm going to let the heads soak overnight in the hydocloric acid if that don't get it I will try the oven, I have scratched and prodded, one head is free and ond block hole is free, ironkly they came from a different side, the one in the block is going to be harder, I don't know if anyone has experience with one with the loader, but there is no room to pull one only off.

The hydrochloric acid worked on the heads, I was able to get a long drill bit in block and drill it out, thanks for the help, does anyone know best place to buy head gaskets.

A CAT dealer will have head gaskets. I bought some 2 years ago.

The new head gaskets are a single material, that black "cardboard" stuff whereas the prior ones were copper-clad. Still work the same and maybe just as reusable. I have two sitting in the parts bin ready for the day
