these photos are not complete, but they are the only digitals I have. They give some idea of the layout.
This whole thing started with buying a $400 dozer to make a shooting range
and one thing led to another.
The engine frame is welded to a 1" plate which is bolted to the 315 bell
housing. I also have bolt on 1.5" diagonal support rods. The 11" Twin Disc
pto end goes through the bell housing center.I used a chain coupling
to connect the pto shaft to a stub shaft which in turn uses the Cat split
sleeve. The stub shaft was the only snag due to the odd size of the Cat
trans shaft. Most every thing else is stuff I scavanged around for or had
laying around. the best score is the 25gpm Commercial pump i got at a
yard sale for $10. This pump is run off the front with a love-joy coupling.
that is why the radiator is higher than what I planned but it works.
The only draw back is the track frames are no longer oscillating but I might
change this. The Perkins 4.236 does not have the low speed lugging like
the 315 but it will push a full blade of loose sand and clay. I am currently
re doing the hydraulics. The Laplant valve is for a winch(I think) and
is not real responsive for blade use. I'm thinking of using it for a 3-point
and adding a simple open center valve for the blade.
All and all the machine is working great for 'light duty dozing"
Just to clear the air, I don't want any one to think I'm out here butchering
Cats but I could'nt see junking this one if there was a chance to bring it
back to life. The other d-4s I'm keeping stock. as a matter of fact I'll
give a plug for Cat. They have had everything I needed and quality made
to boot. Here in Michigan after market support is lacking

Very interesting. It is a conversation piece for sure, at least you don't have the sometimes dreaded pony engine to deal with😄 Thanks for posting the pics. Don

That's an interesting combination you have there, especially to me as an old Massey-Ferguson (Perkins) dealer AND PV CAT owner.

Did you do the conversion?
Are there photos available?

That's interesting----in the past, I have thought alot about different re-powering configurations, with some of the Perkins engines in the back of my mind due to the fact that we have alot of old Massey combines sitting around here in the Delta.

Massey's design on the mounting of the Cat 3208 in their 1805 tractors (back in the 70's) makes for an easily adaptable conversion of most any engine into any frame (with the use of a little imagination). For those of you not familiar with the 1805 design----the engine was connected to the clutch input shaft via a short "flex" mount drive shaft. There was no "mated" mount of the engine to the clutch bell housing.

Thanks for the pictures.

Funny the subject of conversions came up, I am contemplating using a 4BT Cummmins that I have sitting here to repower a D4D that I just aquired. The 3304 has a bad crank and block, I think the 4BT would work good until I can build a new 3304 motor. The 4BT is also used in Walden dozers, Case and TD8s. Istill have alot of research to do. The 3304 is 75 hp and the 4BT is 105 hp so it may work out well. I"ll keep you posted.

Hi Tony, those are the only digital pictures I have. I did the work
myself. I was concerned about engine skid flex so I used a chain
coupling to connect the shafts. It was the cheapest and most
compact way to go. I also set the engine up so it was shim
adjustable for shaft alignment.
Time will tell on the durability of using a skid arrangement vs frame
rail to trans case attatchment. The 6u might not be the best choice,
due to the narrow confines of the tracks. another reason I went with
a skid.
The outfit I work for was a Perkins dealer, so I had a good access to
spare parts . Plus I like the Perkins, after working on the engines for 5
years, most of the problems I seen were from user abuse and neglect.

What a lot of work to find out that the Perkins has completely different power band and runs at a higher speed than the Cat! Seriously, it needs speed reduction or the Perkins will be running deeply in lug all the time.

tomorrow i will try to post a picture, its a perkins 3 cilinder, what type i want to find out what cuold it be???
i tried the engine and it runs has a flame start divice but not conected to the fuel lines,
but only one track is running so maybe the power overload (i think 3 cil diesel 25-30 hp) knocked out one final drive.
