D4 mag, no spark

First off, I'm not intimidated by my magneto. That would be like being intimidated by a crescent wrench. BUT, I am extremely frustrated by it. I don't use this guy very often and it usually takes several hours or a day to get him to run. This time, after a day of screwing around with the mag, I still don't have spark, or, I should say, it sparked once and no more. It has good snap, the points are nearly new, set at .016 in, and I replaced the condensor. I have a regular toggle switch on it that I also replaced. I disconected it also but still no spark. I do have carbon wires to the plugs but never had a problem with them in the past. Wire core wires are hard to find. I'll call Napa today. I don't think the timing is wrong since the crank pully was aligned and the rotor mark was aligned. I even rotated everything to see if it could be set up 180 out. Came back wright. I suppose it's possible that my new condensor could be bad too. I bought 4 so I'll try another. What else is there? If it's grounding out, I don't know where else to check. Hate asking for help but HELP!

There is a few things that causes mags to not fire so if you,ve tried about all you know then maybe if you have a mag shop near by it might just pay to have them check it out for you.

Give the points a good cleaning/filing and check conductivity when closed. You have to lift the wire in the upper LH corner to do the checking. Doesn't take long for points to oxidize, depending on use and climate.

Also get rid of those carbon wires and Champion spark plugs if you are using them and switch to NGK A6 if they are 18mm.

The NGK A-6 is listed as obsolete and no longr availabl, it has been replaced by the NGK AB-6 which is also a solid core spark plug. It also works very well with a grumpy old magneto.

You will find solid core wire at NAPA sometimes but you can always find it at a marina.

I bought a tractor real cheap because it lost power and would barely run. The owner sold it to me where and as it sat. I hauled it home and sure enough no spark (or more accurately, inconsistant spark) Changed the carbon wires to solid and it runs very nicely now. I would try the wires.
