just recently replace the seals(on my d4/ht4) at the units control levers..While topping off the fluid I noticed that a vent hole was brazed over on the hyd. tank cap. Was this done in past to maybe slow hyd. leaks while the machine was not in use? Should I drill out the weld?

All the #44 pumps and most all Cat hydraulic tanks I have seen use a non vented cap and rely on an air cushion to dampen hydraulic shock.

There is still sort of a mystery about the HT4 though that (going from memory, can't find my manual) shows a vent line tap on that tank mounted above the engine going somewhere???
