Are there aftermarket fuel and oil filters for the D4 U series? My brother looked at my Cat and said "good, it has the tall filter" but I dont see any reference to more than one style of fuel filter on a 6U. Am I missing something? Grant.

The standard Cat filter system works good, but has gotten rather pricey as you have 3 or 4 sock filters in the tower. They use to box the right number for each application and include the gaskets. But all have gone to one filter per box and no gaskets. But hey are available from Wix and Baldwin and probably others.

I have been buying them at Napa with there big filter sale, close to half price I think it is. Each store seems to do the sale at different time.

Went to Napa Auto today and they could find nothing for the U series D4. He did say that if I had Cat numbers, he could probably cross reference. Does anyone have the Napa numbers or the Cat numbers for oil and fuel filters for a D4-6U serial # 6070???. It appears that according to my serial number, I should have the early bypass oil filter but many have been converted to the full flow. I dont know if I can tell without removing the element. Is there any visual way of telling? _____Grant.

Fuel filter # is 7B8264 changes to 489-3196 requires four, $14.53 each from Cat. Gaskets are 7B7635 requires two. Bypass filter is smaller with the brass screen housing, the full flow is just the filter element. Full flow filter is 1R0659 from Cat $9.51

Rome K/G thank you very much. With those numbers I can go to my local Napa dealer instead of the 3 hour round trip to the Napa that has a separate truck counter. At the prices you mention, Cat filters are not bad but again, it is the three hour drive. Another cup of coffee and I am off to Napa Auto. Thanks again. Grant.

Your welcome Grant! good luck! I always buy a few extra that way you can just grab them off your own shelf and ready to go, same with o-rings, I always have at least a dozen or so of all part numbers used on my equipment on hand so you dont have to run to the dealer every damn time for one o-ring. lol

NAPA number for the full flow filter is 1161, WIX 51161

The bypass filter usually has a T handle on top of the housing while the full flow has a hex nut, sometimes with a slot cut in it for a bar to loosen it.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

I bought the 1161 filter yesterday from Napa for a little less than $15. They had to order the fuel filters (1 day delivery) but the gaskets will take several days. I will find out in an hour or so if the 1161 oil filter is actually what I need. According to the book, my serial # 6070 should have the older sock type oil filter but at this point I am assuming that most old tractors have been converted. If it turns out I need the older type does anyone have a number for that type? I have picked up the Servicemens reference book and operations and maintenance book, but looking at the parts books on ebay, they seem very pricy. I am trying to avoid buying Jensales because of the lousy diagrams, but I may have to. Thanks, Grant.
