Hey guys. I have a neighbor that has the opertunity to buy a D4 for $800. I have little info about this dozer as of now but supposedly the pony runs not sure about main engine He was told it has a D44 engine in it. No idea if that’s correct or possible. I told him buy it if all else fails it’s worth more than that In Parts He is supposed to get serial # for me on Friday. What else should I tell him to look for ?

Lots of value/expense in the tracks, so that is always a good place to really look close and take lots of pictures or better yet have someone go along that knows how to measure and compare with specs.

Could be a D4400 engine used on the RD4 from the late 1930's and then the D4 through 1947. It would be a 4.25 bore 4 cylinder with tall injectors that are connected together along the tops by a return line. Also both intake and exhaust manifolds are on the right side of the engine. Later models, the U series, made 1948-1959 had the D315 4.5" bore 4 cylinder engine with intake on left and exhaust on right as well as low pressure injectors without the fuel return line manifold connecting them.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Sounds like the D4400 engine. Not sure but I think the 4G, 7J, 2T and 5T series all ran the 4400 until the 6U/7U series when it became the D315?....the main visible difference would be the main engine air cleaner up front by the rad as opposed to in front of the operator at the firewall. I do stand to be corrected as always, hopefully a pro will chime in. Theyll want lots of pictures and movies too if you can....

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
