Has anyone tried converting the pony motor to a newer design gas motor? Say a Briggs and stratton? I recently repowered a John Deere 400 with a 23 horse Briggs and it works great, easy to start. How hard would it be to rework the gears to drive the main engine? I have never opened it up so I don't know what would be involved.

Hi, Jl628.
I can't answer the technical questions that you have posed but I can tell you that almost anything is possible - - - - - IF you have enough time and cash to throw at it. For mine, there would be two issues here, the engineering side of it and the cost-vs-benefit balance.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

If your pony motor has gone to the great beyond, converting to direct start isn't too hard. .just takes a bit of sweat, skinned knuckles and is probably cheaper than rebuilding the pony. Major expense would be the starter motor itself, an MT 42 or 50. Check Old Magnet's site for the destructions, it'll explain the full procedure.

Wouldn't be hard at all - just needs $$ (for new gears, housings, mounts, etc, etc)
Do it and post pictures.
Cheers,
Neil.

I would rather spend the money and do a conversion to direct electric start. A "happy button" is much easier to operate 😊 than trying to get a "Broke & Stuck" to start... 😞( 😞(

AFAIK B&S designed the horizontal 2 cyl boxer starting engines for Cat, but I may be wrong...

Over here B&S got the nickname (for obvious reasons) of "Broke & Stuck" (Afrikaans version : "Breek & Staan" Breek: Broken, Staan: Stuck, non-operational, stationary (not working)...)

Hence my aversion to a conversion substituting anything to B&S...

Like I told another member; When I told the late Fred Hedrick that I was going to paint my 2 TON yellow, he replied; "You can if you want to, but, IT WON'T BE ORIGINAL" I have always been so thankful for such advice from a great historian!!!
You can cobble up a starting engine or a direst electric start; "BUT IT WON'T BE ORIGINAL"

Yeah but I don't have too much concern for it being original. It would be nice but I'm doing this to to work it and make it reliable and functional. One thing I do like about the pony motor is starting in cold weather. It's going to be in central Idaho and used during winter. Not too sure about an electric conversion getting her up and running in 15 degrees.

Can you do an electric conversion and retain a functional pony motor?

Electric start conversion and retain a functional pony start to the main. For my needs, I think I'd rather have the pony if I have to pick one or the other.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
