Okay so my dad is working his way through the rebuild on his 7U D4 and is looking for any details he can find on head gasket sealing. The reason he went into this in the first place was a leaky head gasket so he really wants to get this right. When he took it apart he could tell it was leaking around the sleeves and up 3 of the studs on the head, this is right around the very oversize holes in the head gasket that surround 1/2 inch studs. The old sleeves were installed on a copper shim but the copper shim is no longer available and has been replaced by a steel ring. He checked the sleeve protrusion above the block and it varied from 0.004 to 0.10 inch from sleeve to sleeve. The book he has did not say what sleeve protrusion should be. After having finding several things that he was unsure of concerning the head sealing he talked with a trusted engine machinist who put him in contact with a former Cat service manager that worked on these old cat 40 years ago. This guy seems to have it together because he was coming up with information like sleeve protrusion can only vary from 0.004 to 0.006 from sleeve to sleeve. Does anyone have any information about the new steel rings or how to seal up a head gasket on one of these old engine? Has any one had a bad experience that they have learned from any any documentation with a good sealing procedure. The fella my dad talked to said they usee a red gasket maker to seal the sleeves to the block is that all? Does any one use high temp aluminum paint or copper coat? What ever you can give me I would appreciate.
Thanks,
Matt

liner protrusion has been discussed here before - perhaps a search will find it.

I can't help on that front but in terms of coating the head gasket, I made several enquiries and was told "yes you need to coat it otherwise it will seep" to "no, you don't need to" - depending on who you asked.

But after talking to a Land Rover expert, I ended up using Hylomar on my D4 head gasket - I figured it could not hurt anyway, and so far so good.

I will do more digging in the older posts I found a couple last night. Any information on where to apply the permatex? Just apply it around the top of the liners or do you put some in the counter bore before you install the liner? Any chance the part numbers for the shims on your 3306 will work on the D315?

Use the sealer to just coat both sides of the head gasket. I would not use any in the counterbore. No go on 3306 shims...different bore size.

Thanks, my dad talked with an engine mechanic at a Cat dealer this morning and he said that once they went to the stainless steel ring rather than the copper ring they reduced the liner protrustion to 0.001 to 0.002 inch rather than 0.002 to 0.0056 inch. The mechanic also admitted that using an anerobic sealer on the top of the sleeve might not be a bad idea. He said all the Cat engines today just use that stainless steel ring to seal the sleeves.

How are people fixing liner protrusion? My dads liners vary from 0.002 to 0.006. According to what we have learned they should all be with in 0.002 of each other. Anyone machining sleeves down or do you get the counter bore in the block lowered?

If you can't get what you need with various thickness shims you will need to lower/cut the counterbore.
