Hi, My grandpa recently joined ACMOC and I just found the website. We have an early 1940's cat D4 with the LeTourneau cable blade on it. My grandpa bought it in 1990 in running condition, but let it set for many years. We are now in the process of getting it going again. One thing we are missing is the generator. It definitely had a generator at some point because all the lights are still on it, and the hole where the generator was has been blocked off by a shade tree mechanic at some point. Any information on what kind of generator it is supposed to have or where I could find one would be greatly appreciated

post a photo of the hole, there are a couple units available. what you have left in mounting will determine which one you need. i got several. good luck.

Is it a battery or no-battery system?

I don't know when I will be able to get pics because the tractor is not at our shop right now. It is a no battery system. If anybody on here could post a pic of what the generator setup looks like I would greatly appreciate it.

It would depend on whether it is am early or late model 1940's D4. I think that the engine changed about 1947, but I do stand to be corrected.

The original setup was a choice of 75w (two lamp) or 140w (four lamp).

It is a four lamp setup. All the lights are still on it, but the generator is not. From the diagram it looks like the only think missing is the generator itself.

I am pretty sure all the lights are original. My grandpa is the fourth person to own this D4. Uncle Sam owned it first, the the State of North Carolina owned it, then a man that lived in the mountains of NC bought it to build a driveway to his house.

I will try to get some pictures next week, but I think the generator search might be on hold. The guy that is working on it for us pulled the cylinder head off of it and apparently a rat had been living in one of the cylinders. You would be amzed what rat urine will do you a cylinder.

ok guys, here are some pics of the D4. I forgot to write down the serial number, but my grandpa said that it is a 2T.

you can see a little olive drab paint under the yellow in a few places

So I am bringing this thread back from the dead. I have started looking for a generator again. If you look at the pictures I posted there is a pretty good one of where the generator was and what is left. Any help would be appreciated.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
