Hello to All Club Members:
I have a problem with a 4A bulldozer blade assembly (6F1145) that I bought for my D4 (7U22732) tractor. This tractor is equipped with a radiator guard covering a #44 hydraulic power unit. Shortly after purchasing the bulldozer blade assembly I attached the unit to the tractor on level ground and found inadequate (less that 1 inch) clearance between the C-frame group and the radiator guard. After discovering this problem I discussed the issue with a knowledgeable friend he suggested that I might lengthen the C-frame at both bearing mounts by about 2 inches to provide adequate clearance. After delaying this project for some time I've decided to take action but I need further information about the bearings themselves. My book indicates that 3F6447 bearings are installed on this C-frame. After close inspection I have identified the welds attaching the bearings to the C-frame. Can these bearings be removed by grinding or air-arcing at the weld joints? Can the C-frame then be lengthened at these endpoints and subsequently can the original bearings be reinstalled? Thanks for any help that you can give me. David.

Hello,

I do not have any real input but would it be possible to just move the trunnion attachment forward that 2" you need? I really do not know for sure but it is an idea worth considering.

Before you do that, have you checked if the trunnion mounts are reversible, such that if swapped side to side, would increase the clearance? Just thinking out loud - not sure if those mounts are removable - the 2S blade on my 5U has removable trunnion mounts.

Hi, Realwork.
First time I can remember seeing you on the BB,so 'Welkum' to Yellow Fever-ville.

If I remember correctly, those trunnion bearings are welded into the box of the C-frame with a spigot that slips up inside the box to help with alignment. I seem to remember that the wall thickness of the C--frame is about 3/8". I would be very surprised if they could not be cut out as you describe, then extend the frame a little and weld them back in. If I were doing it, I would have the C-frame in place around the front of the tractor and the trunnion bearings and caps bolted on the trunnions to help ensure alignment.

BUTTTT, I am also surprised that you have so little clearance around the hydraulic tank guard that you see a need to do it. Have you checked the tank guard for correct mounting? There is not normally much clearance at all between the tank and guard when the guard is correctly fitted. Another possibility might be that somebody has fitted non-standard trunnions to your tractor. Here is a side on photo of a 6U D4 with Cat 4A dozer. It looks to have 'miles' of clearance.

And here are 2 more that give a fairly good view of the mounting. Be aware that the first photo is of a 5-roller track frame 6U.

P. S. On looking at your photo - which didn't show up when I first opened your post - I noticed that there seems to be more clearance on the left side of your unit than on the right and the tilt pivot in the C-frame looks to be off-center by at least one complete row of holes in the guard. Do you have equal clearance between the track and C-frame at the front of the track on both sides? Also, are your dozer trunnions the same distance ahead of the outrigger bearing on the track frame on both sides?

Just my 0.02. Hope it helps.

maybe u don't have a u series tractor, or track frames. heres a j series d4 that had to have the push beams lengthened for pump clearance.

Seems like mismatched parts, they are not all the same. Be aware that there is a difference in the push arm mounting width between early and late trunnion mounts as well as a two inch difference in push arm length between early and late D4's

Im thinking you may well be onto something here Deas
I also noticed and it may have no bearing on the problem at all but the grill guard is flat unlike the others in the other photo's that have a bend half way up for the hydraulic tank to fit behind
dunno if that means anything at all or not
