I was running the D4 and noticed a squealing- high pitched buzzing sound when using reverse.
Later after shutting down the tractor. I went and checked the Trans Fluid level and noticed a shiny, radius etched out of the side of the dipstick.
I tried bending/ tweaking the dipstick trying to slide it back down without hitting any parts of the Trans on the way down, but can't seem to get it right without it feeling like it hitting something. I was maybe thinking of getting one of those flexi universal replacement ones and cutting to length? It seems like the original one is getting close to snapping the more I try to tweak it. Maybe I could find a used one from general gear that isn't so crooked and try again.
Not positive if this was the cause of the sound I was hearing in reverse as I didn't have time to run it without the dipstick but didn't look good nonetheless.

Hi, Chrismill.
I suspect that if there is something in that transmission rubbing that hard against that dipstick, there is something radically not right in there. I would suggest that you replace the dipstick - or rebuild it to original - - - - - - - - - - - - - AFTER you have investigated and remedied whatever is causing it inside the transmission. It likely won't be cheap but not as pricey now as later when/if the cause makes itself more 'obvious'.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

You might pull the guide for the dipstick. Mine had a slight bend in it to keep the dipstick away from the gears. If the guide is installed backwards it will cause a lot of problems. The bend in the guide should be away from the center line where the gears are located.

Thanks for the replies, I was wondering about the guide, I've seen pictures of the dipstick guides that are tilted slightly at an angle. The picture I saw showed the dipstick up by the right brake pedal. On mine(serial#35424) it is located to the right of the gear selector, and the guide seems to be straight.Up by the brake pedal there is a flat plate with 2 bolts where it looks like one could be-

Just to make sure we are on the same page, it is the part inside the transmission that has a bend away from the gears. The guide can be installed both ways with only one being correct.

Oh-ok I got it, thought the guide was on top on the outside. Now I get it, thanks.
Maybe I tweaked the dipstick too much and it's missing the guide or possibly it's in the wrong way.
