Hi I am a new acmoc member and new owner of a 1952 d4 7u dozer. I have a solid running machine that needs a few minor things. My question is I am trying to tighten the tracks on both sides. Here is where I am clamp nuts are all loose. The adjuster nut has 2 splits in it and turns freely. Problem is it doesn't seem to be pushing out the idler. I will also add that at some point the idler itself has been adjusted out by shimming it out from the brackets. Also on one side there are three washer shims between the adjustment nut and spring plate nut. On both sides the adjuster nut is basically right against the spring plate nut. Thanks for any help.

most likely bad threads on the adjuster nut/rod--i had to partially tighten the clamp to get my adjuster nut to move and hold.

Thanks I will try to tighten the bolts then try the adjuster again. Also any easy way to get to nut or special wrench to tighten it since it sits almost right behind blade bracket.

the wrench for the nut has an angle offset so you can get onto the nut for a small amount of turn

Tighten idler with a porta power and fabricate shims the right thickness. Even if you buy new nuts and go to the trouble of installing them they likely will not work because the threads are worn on shaft and changing that is big trouble.

Second that- if the threads were usable the idler wouldn't have shims on the bracket.

Hi Team,
from memory, the spacers pictured are part of an Attachment for the larger diameter front idlers--at first thought I see no reason that thicker/more spacers could not be used to adjust track tension if the adjuster and spring center bolt threads are worn out--usually caused from excessive movement of the idler on the track frame --both up and down and sideways--due to not maintaining correct idler hanger wear plate and side plate clearances.
Operating the unit with loose idler adjuster nut clamping bolts does not help either.
Cheers,
Eddie B.
