D4 7U steering clutch ajustment problem

So the 1950 D4 had not turned left in 2 or 3 years, mainly because the lever bearings had froze up with rust. I got it in the shop and drained about 3 or 4 gallons of water out of the "dry" compartment. I replaced the steering lever bearings in the transmission cover and got that fixed and started putting it back together. I got the trans cover back on and started adjusting the steering clutches. The right side is ok but near the end of the adjustment. The left side will not get close to tight and it is at the end of the adjustment. Is this because the steering clutches are rusted together? Can something else be worn out? Or do the steering cluthes just need replaced? Is there any "tricks" to get more length out of the adjusting rods? I had the rear end out of this machine about 10 years ago to replace the final drive pinion. At that time, I measured the steering clutch thickness and it was within spec and it does not have many hours on it since.

I think your clutches may be swelled and stuck. Once they swell in the clutch pack the linkages hyper extend themselves giving you the exact problem you are now experiencing. This would make sens especially if you drained 3 to 4 gallons of water out.

I'm pretty sure your right that I got it backwards!
Reading your post describing that the Right side is correct, sparked my memory of someone else posting a couple of years ago that he was having a similar issue and your correct that indeed it was a failed bearing.

Pete your are correct when you said "drujinin - I read his description the other way. I thought he meant that he has screwed the adjuster bolt in all the way and it still doesn't reach the clutch release collar. I got this impression because he said that the right side is adjusted, but doesn't have much adjustment room left (meaning it is pretty worn, but still serviceable), but the left is at the end of adjustment, but still doesn't reach the ear on the clutch release collar."

This machine is not worth the effort to remove the steering clutch assemblies and rebuild them. What I did was remove the trans cover again and I removed the adjusting screws and locking nuts and cleaned them up with a tap and die. So hopefully I can get a little more movement out of them because they were messed up at the ends. Then I welded some more material to the bottom of the arms were it makes contact with the release bearing cage. I will put the trans cover back on and let you know what happens.
