So I tackled my starter tonight guys.. my brushes seem to be worn pretty bad .Was surprised to see the brushes were not made of graphite. They seem to be copper or bronze. I think I could make them if I could find out what material they are. I'm only lacking one dimension but I think I could figure that one out. Any guesses of what they are made of . Thanks

Search online for the answer to your question. While you might cut a larger brush down to fit your starter, making brushes would not be easy.

I saw a post that mentioned a pony starter repair kit sold online (ebay?). Haven't seen it myself though.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Thanks ccjersey but it would be no problem. Ive machined brushes before of the graphite kind for the electrical shop at work. I seen a kit or two on ebay but my bushings and springs are in remarkably good shape.

Hi Team,
brushes are Cat Part No 9B9093 which is Delco Remy 811553.
From memory they are a sintered copper material that is a fairly common usage in starter motors.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Thanks for that..I will probably order the kit since it is a special copper process. Can someone explain the commutator a little. I looked online and it talks of commutators being made up of copper bars and mica etc. From what I can see mine looks like the groove is very shallow and gunked up . Can I just regroove and clean them to more depth with a hacksaw blade? Or just clean what groove remains?

Starter commutators do not need the mica undercut. The brushes are hard enough to wear the copper and mica at the same rate. Commutator does need to round and even for brushes to seat properly.

OM thanks for the info. This starter stuff is new to me. Stephen will get that pic posted soon. I went ahead today and ordered the ebay rebuild kit for $19. The brushes looked pretty indentical to mine and the seller stated the kit was for starters used from 1948-53 on d2, d4 pony motors. Also stopped by the John Deere tractor store and ordered a gasket kit for my Tu4c zenith carb. They didnt have a schematic of the kit so I guess it will be a "shot in the dark".

Put a straight edge over the commutator bars and hold it up to the light.
If you can see light between it needs to be turned.
