I've never had a problem once they've been cleaned out properly !!!!
use thinners and if still mucky small stones / grit give it a good shaking....
I add a tiny bit of oil to the fuel as a preventive....👍

Clean it good once and coat it inside. Several products available to do it with. I use one called RED KOTE. I think there is a POR 15 product and there are others.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

I use Redcote in one of mine and then have used chain saw mixed premium gas since. Knock on wood but so far so good. I put about 30 ea 3/8 nuts in it first and shook it for a few days every chance I got. I've heard of them being bolted to a spoke om a tractor wheel and being rattle cleaned while doing fieldwork. Put a threaded plug in the bottom before you pour the redcote in so you dont fill the threads.

Muriatic acid works very good to clean out the tank.. Then clean with baking soda solution to neutralize the acid. Then recoat and let dry for several weeks before adding fuel. Letting the coating cure completely is very important.

I've thought about making a tank out of Stainless Steel. Are the D4 tanks the same as the D2 tanks? I have a D2 3J that has a Nasty tank...
