Do any of you guys run a muffler on your dozer? Personally I like it loud, I was just wondering if it had any performance gains. I run a Areo Turbine 5050XL on my truck and love it.

At the dealer you very seldom ever saw a tractor with a muffler but if one is used probably a straight through one would have little back pressure. The parts book lists a couple styles for the D4.

SJ is right. . .if a muffler is used it should be a straight through like a glass pack. Also, if you don't want a muffler a spark arrestor by itself quiets 'em down quite a bit.

I ran my D2 5U for years with various stacks and never a muffler with no problem. My D4 7U came with a short stack with a rain trap. When that blew apart I ran one season with a short stack and knocked out my hearing. That was back in '86 (huh?). Now I run a big ol' muffler on it and hearing protection if I can find it.

I built one for my 7U. Runs a fair but quieter. Doesn't seem to perform any different.

I bought a muffler for my D47U from the Cat dealer. It lowered the noise level to about half of what it was. I still wear hearing protection when I run my D4. The pony motor is now the noisy one that I am putting up with. I am just glad that the Diesel engine starts quickly enough so I can shut the pony down ASAP.

Power Stroke,
Here's a link to some pics I posted on the acme board some time back.

Drujinun, on mine the pipe is blocked off inside, with heaps of small holes on either side of the plate that blocks it off. Surface area of the holes on each side is greater than the area of the pipe to try and minimize restriction of the emissions.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
