I met an elderly fellow who had purchased a D4 7u and had it hauled up to a mountain cabin to build a road, about 50 miles out of town. After it had set for a few years he couldn't get the pony motor to start, he pulled the motor and took it home. Now it is very rusty and doesn't look good. My question is, can I make up a plate to cover the water inlets for the pony, and attempt to pull start the dozer. He wants to get it home. My concerns were water circulation, I need to leave it running on the trip home if possible, if I can get it started. Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks Wyatt

Do as you say, make up a plate that covers the flywheel housing and block the cylinder head connection and your good to go. It is not required to have water circulation through those connections.

Thank you Old Magnet, I hoped that was the case. I will use the pony block as a template. This elderly guy is very nice and knowledgeable in many things, just not a mechanic. I hope to get his cat to his place, then I will talk him into letting me try to restore the pony motor.

Hi, Wyatt.
Unless that mountain is on top of the Arctic icecap or within a couple hundred miles of the South Pole. give some thought to putting direct electric start on it. Have a chat with the old guy about it. Chances are it could be done for about the cost of restoring the old pony motor. If the diesel in anything like reasonable condition, cold starts are usually not much of a problem. And, MAN, it sure does spare that right arm.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Hello from Montana, Deas Plant
Thanks for the input. I have a D4 7u I bought for the winch, for my 7u. It has a pony and an electric start, got it for scrap price. It had been used and abused. I now know what a 0% undercarriage looks like. Wow! I am hoping the pony on this second cat is all working. It turns over and has compression, I just haven't had a chance to clean the fuel system out and try to start it. The machine had sat for 3 years, the diesel started right up with the electric start. I want to put the electric on my first 7u. Then I will know what it takes to put the electric on one, and if necessary will try it on the other cat. I am hoping between the 2 ponies I can make up one good one.
Thanks again

Seems we're talking different electric starts. Deas is referring to direct electric start (no pony). Check the flywheel housing below the pony clutch to see if it has the three bolt cover where a direct electric starter would mount.

Old Magnet,
I was referring to direct electric start for the diesel. The parts cat I bought has an electric starter, and a pony, it is a 12,000 serial number, 1950 I think. The cat I would like to put this starter on, in conjunction with it's pony motor is a 18,000 serial number. It has a protruding pattern on the block where the starter would go, but no bolts or holes. My plan is to make a template after I remove the electric that would bolt to something like the oil pan bolts and the block as a guide to drill, I would assume that the starter hole would need to be machined to a fairly close tolerance. Does this sound reasonable? I will try to add a picture.

I thought there was a permanent thread on electric starters and conversions??
Anyways, this gets done at least once a year on this Forum. There was one not too long ago(last fall) that missed by a little bit on the holes, it turned into a rather long process if I remember right? Try using the SEARCH function in the upper right of your screen to see if you can locate some of the previous threads on this subject. Also OM has a TON of info and experience on installing these.
Good Luck and keep the updates flowing when you start the process!
