Most of the difference is in the controls. The D4 was earlier and had a control arrangement that mounted under the seat....more suited to the side tank model tractors. The D4N is a later unit and has fender mounted controls more suited to the seat tank models. The D4N also weighs a little bit more.
There are only minor differences between the Hyster D4 and D4N towing winches. The biggest differences are in the full drum speed, and the maximum line pull, with the D4N having an increased line pull over the D4, and a slight difference in full drum speed. I cannot see any difference in weight between the two.
The Hyster D4 pulls a maximum of 15,400 lbs .. the D4N pulls a maximum of 17,020 lbs.
The D4N had the option of a PTO for a rear mount hydraulic pump, which was built in at the factory. I understand this to mean the PTO could not be fitted later.
The D4 is easily identified by having "D4" cast into the winch sideplates .. the D4N has "D4N" cast into the side plates.
The parts/operator/fitting instruction manuals are available from the Allied Winches site. If you examine the parts sections closely, you can see the difference in the control linkage setup as OM described.

We have some variation in specifications.
OM - Your D4 winch spec sheet appears to be a real early spec sheet, possibly early WW2, or maybe even just prior to WW2? Is it dated?
My D4 Spec sheet is dated 3/46, and the D4N spec sheet is dated 10/47. I was trying to get spec sheets dated close to the D4 7U release date of early 1947, and which would more closely relate to any original fit winch.
Besides the D4N having some slightly larger bearings inside, another difference is is the braking system. The D4 has a system that uses a brake band and the D4N has brake shoes. The D4N uses a a brake adjuster that's similar to the adjusters on "S" cams while the D4 has the adjuster inside the right hand side cover. Both were available with under seat controls or fender mounted controls, both had brake levers that were fender mounted.
As I recall, the D4 is more suited to the J and T models while the D4N was for the U models. They both mount the same and I've had a 7U that had the D4 winch. .worked well as long as I had the brake band adjusted properly.

Some one knows what’s the difference between the Hyster D4N, the D4D and the D4E winches? I found the D4N spec sheet, and the manuals at:

But I want to know which one has more pulling capacity; the D4N I believe has 17,020 lbs.
