I have the service manual, but hard to see if i can remove & replace the brake bands with a) Transmission cover removed, and b) Winch installed.

I'd have access to the top of the bands, but do i need the winch removed to access the back side?

thanks in advance

Trans cover removed, No need to remove the winch. Unless the control shaft is in the way.

There is a control shaft that goes into a gear box of sorts on top of the winch. Can this be removed from the winch?

Here's a picture of the control shaft & gear box on top of winch. I'm thinking i can remove the gear box & shaft, then pull the trans cover. Sound about right?

looks like i'm going to need the Cat publication for the winch...

BTW: any idea what the winch might weigh? I'm guessing 1500 lbs or so..?

Supposedly my D2 winch is 800#. I can't imagine the D4 winch would be twice as heavy if that weight is accurate?

You only need to pull the winch if you are doing steering clutches.. You can remove that top cover of the winch once the seat is removed. It is just a single fork in there that hangs straight down. D4/D4N winch is ~1300lbs as Rome said.

The winch manuals are free here: https://www.alliedsystems.com/pubs/pubs.php# (go to allied winch/parts manuals/archive).

Just to clarify, I think you meant "just remove the transmission cover", if I'm correct?

Yes, remove only the trans cover (i'm replacing it with a 2 piece anyway). Hoping not to remove the winch as all my heavy equipment is 450 miles east of the D4....

This is great info! The winch will be a future project, the drum is cracked in half.. not sure it's viable at this point without a donor.

Todd;
Let me put in a plug for the great YouTube series PNW Hillbilly did detailing the work he has done on his D47U. Now I know that we all want to get away on quick jobs that are inexpensive but while you have it opened you may want to take a look at the flywheel clutch and the steering clutch controls. The controls for the steering clutches are attached to the transmission cover and over time the bearings get worn and rusted and it makes it harder to operate. While you have it all opened up it may be the time to do a quick fix that you will enjoy every time you operate the tractor. I am in the final stages of putting my 7U back together, Be careful it can be a slippery slope. On mine I opened it up to free up the steering clutches, now having replaced most of the bearings and seals for the steering clutches, the bevel gear, the flywheel clutch pilot bearing, and friction disc and the break bands. I am ready to finally enjoy running it. As I told my son, I am going to do this once. You or your kids may have to work on it but I don't plan on ever having to tear it down again. And yes that winch is heavy but for just the breaks it can stay on.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
