Picked up a replacement bevel gear shaft for my one legged D4 7U from a local salvage yard.

Upon loading the assembly in my truck the tech said it’s actually from a 955 12a. When I questioned this he reassured me it is the exact parts that are in my D4 7U.

Does this sound correct?

Planning to pull mine apart in a few weeks and hope i have the correct shaft for reassembly.

Any information/advise is greatly appreciated!

7U1 to 7U33912 uses a 6B9919 bevel bear shaft.
7U33913 -up and the 12A uses a 6H3582 (or 7K8130) bevel gear shaft.

Well dang, I wonder what the difference/interchange is... I guess I’ll get the D4 pulled and take some exact measurements.

Does anyone happen to have this diagram for a D4 7U?

There are two parts books for the D4 7U (different serial number ranges) in the technical library which will include this page.
There is also the pats book for the 955 12A series traxcavator.

Hi Zzzopp,
I have just put my 7U back together recently, the differences between the two shafts it is slightly larger on the latter models than the earlier ones.
The good part is it will fit as you have all the misc bits on the donor shaft, all you have to do is change the crown wheel over.

Regards

Be aware that the pinion changes also.

Hi Team,
scans below may help. Service Bulletin, June 20 1956.
Seems the new heavier duty Bevel shaft and bearings are adaptable to only some prior U series D4's.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Hi Team,
just found this article regarding what OM refers to above about a pinion change.
The change is also applicable to some earlier than 6U/7U series machines.
Self explanatory in the scan text as to which S/No machines are applicable.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

My D4 is a 7U20251, should already have the larger pinion bearing gear. Since I have a complete assembly from the 955 12a I think it should work!

I’ll take some measurements/pictures as I get it pulled apart.

Thanks for the information!

So it looks like this is the S/N break on the different bevel gear shaft/clutch assemblies.

Fingers crossed the newer assembly will drop into my older (7u20251) housing.
