I just bought a d4 7u series . It has been sitting for over 7 years cause the owner had come down with Alzheimer's . My friend has been running heavy equipment for over 50 yrs knew of the man. So we can't ask the owner any questions about it. But the the under carriage looks to be 80% good it must of had a easy life. maybe because the man had so many bigger machines. I want to get the d4 back in use pulling discs and rippers in my orchard. Here's the story of our first inspection of it. The owner’s family was going to have a sale and advertised it on craigslist. My friend knew the family, and we were helping the owners girl's get some of the equipment running and presentable. As a favor to the owner that my buddy knew for years. We were able to kind of give the girls asking prices on a lot of the bigger stuff. Mostly not running and very old equipment and implements. At that time we told the girls on some of the old bigger worn machines to start by taking offers. We got a old d7 up and running and were going to get the d4 going next .When I inspected the d4 first thing I noticed is that the pony motor's magneto cap was missing and the air cleaner was off and laying in the seat area. Someone had stuffed some rags in the intake.
The girls didn't want to spend any money on parts. We decided to pull start it with the d7. I checked the water it was good I added a little more and I checked the crank case oil that looked brand new still green and blue. Someone had changed it before it was left sitting. the fuel was very low and was 7 years old i think. The weeds around machine were up to the seat so we decided to add new fuel cause I didn't see how to drain tank with out challwing around in the tick infested dry weeds. We pull the d4 about a hundred feet and white smoke was coming out of stack at first and then just stopped the compression was good. but we were running out of daylight and the next day was the sell. So we told the daughters to just get offers on it and it would probably run with some TLC. A few days later they called us and have sold all the running equipment. but they only got one offer a the d4 1500$ . witch I though was cheap for
a machine with 80% under carriage and the looks of a easy life. I got it home now and I am going to start working on it . To get it in good running cond. I will need members advice everyone here has helped me before on my d2's. I will take some pictures and get serial number today.

Its sad when a sale comes up like that! I attended one in the Spring that was an absolute sale due to the guy dying. The stuff sold cheap because none was going to be left behind. I mean its good for the buyers but bad for the sellers as everyone wants true value for their equipment.

I started cleaning tractor up today and went down to caterpillar to order points and condenser and mag cap . Caterpillar said they could only find one cap in the state of PA and that it would cost 150$ plus shipping but they could get points and condenser the next day .So I told them the get points and condenser.
Any suggestions on where to get a mag cap?
I checked tranny oil ,crankcase oil , final drives gears, radiator, crank case oil on pony motor. can anyone think of some other stuff to check before I try a start.

I took a bunch of pictures and am having a hard time up loading them , will keep trying.

Up in the top of this Forum is a Thread with a "Sticky" on it. In there you should be able to find at least one guy that rebuilds/carries old stock magneto parts.
If all else fails, then put a 4 cylinder cap from any Farm Tractor with the same Mag on it. I had a Pony Motor on an RD7 that had a 4 cylinder cap with a Ground Bar across the 2 unused terminals to the base.

As far as pictures go, you need to reduce the size of them down to "Web Page Large" or 600 by 480 format.
Then you slog through the picture uploader and hopefully have success.
If that fails, then go to the bottom of this Forum(Administrtors?) and find the one thread on photo reduction/resize for uploads.

Well I am still cleaning the d4 up . Grease and dirt build up is 3 inchs thick in bottom pan , took firewall off and most of the sheetmetal under feet padels and sides of motor. the pony motor gas tank had a small leak and in side was rusty as hell so i cleaned it out and used the gas tank sealer to keep rust from moving around. The hr meter numbers are missing out of the houseing. I dont know why . I have seen some repairs that were done over the years but all in all the main motor looks ok . Must have had some head work done at one time as the head is clean of yellow paint. The pony is nice and clean and I will start to work on it now. The crankshaft on the pony motor has 3/8 to 1/2 end play though. Still has good compression. I will update you guys in a few days. I forgot how fun it is to bring a machine back to life after so many years of sitting around. I will be buying a new digital camera this week so i can take pictures my old cam took a dump.

Eric, with that much end play in the the pup engine crank I would pull the pup off and dismantle the top. You will probably find that the small dowel pin is mising from the crank bearing. The crank bearings may need to be replaced or properly installed with the locating pin in place. It may help to Loctite the bearing in place. The thrust plate may also require replacing. If you do not repair the problem you may end up either cracking or breaking the crank. These things are not easy to come with these days. Cheers, Larry.

Check the injection pump and governor oil and the clutch and pinion oil levels.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
