Okay so I am looking for someone that has converted a 4 roller frame tractor to a 5 roller frame tractor. My dad has a 4 roller frame on his current D4 with a dozer blade on it. He has always wanted a 5 roller frame to make the cutting edge more stable when cutting a grade. He recently found a slightly newer D4 7U at a scrap yard in town. Pretty sure he can buy anything he want for scrap steel price. What we are considering is buying the whole tractor taking off the parts we want then selling the balance back to the yard. Currently the scrap D4 has a loader on that needs to be cut off to get the roller frames. Another reason to at least get some parts is that the right sprocket on his current D4 has a bad spline and had to be pushed on too far last time he changed the seals.

Any one tried changing roller frames?
Can you still use the pony spring or do you have to use the ridged bar that usually comes with the 5 roller frames?
Comments appreciated.
If you had not figured it out this D4 is a more of a toy not a money maker.

Just check the trackframe set up on the Loader .They usualy have a riidged Frame ,So may not adapt to your Dozer .

Several year ago I found a pair of 5 roller frames and tracks from a newer 7U and replaced the 4 roller frames and tracks that were on my current D4. The newer critter had the spring instead of the rigid bar so all parts were compatible.

Other than everything being heavy and a bit awkward, the swap went nicely. It made the D4 much more easy to doze with, no more whoop de does. The only drawback is it's a tad harder to turn with more track on the ground.

I don't know if this is a ridgid bar tractor or not. He has a full machine shop so I think he could use his old spring and just copy features off of his 4 roller frame and duplicate them onto the 5 roller frame if needed. Thanks for the input. Nice to know someone tried it and feels it is an improvement.

I believe McMike from Bakersfield did a four roller to five roller conversion on his "Mighty D4".

See it at his Playday tomorrow in West Bakersfield.

isn't the track frame longer? actually requiring a 5 roller frame to rebuild? good luck.

I read through some older posts and it sounds like the 5 roller frames that have the rigid bar have shorter gusset bracing on the inside of the swing frames. It also sounds like the front idlers have heavier bearings and the actual roller frames are box section rather than two C-channels.
Still adaptable but it will take some extra work it sounds like.

May I make a suggestion? Maybe just cut off the front of the loaders track frame with one roller and the large idler and the heavy duty bearing ( probably heavy duty because the loader carried heavy loads ) do some careful measuring and use straight edge to keep things in alignment. Trim the inside boxing plate back from the joining weld and make a new boxing plate that would span your welded area. I'll bet if your welding and alignment is right it would take a beating. Also here are the track frames both ridged and osolating for the 5 roller arrangement. I also included both large idlers, the loaders and the osolating. I got the pics out of D47U 27570 to 7U 44307 parts book. At least you have that 7U loader to hack on. Hope this is some help. Charlie
