I have a D4 7J7973W. I'm currently doing a water pump rebuild.
I have a full set of manuals if you need any info.

That picture that Andy posted of his D4 7J sure brings back old memories. There used to be a lot of them old D4's with the toolbox on the hood and the canopy, usually homemade, up here in the woods of northeast Minnesota. Most were used as skidders and just used a chain from the drawbar to drag the trees to the landing. In them days we carried a file in our back pocket as the logs were dragging full length in the dirt all the time. Thanks for the picture.

Hey Andy, In picture 3 of your last post there is a heavy cable sticking out of what appears th be the canopy base plate. Is the canopy post cable on the bottom? Someone trying to take the vibration noise out of it? I admit, I am confused.

I wasn't expecting this much interest in my old "gem"
I'll give you guys a bit of history. At least what I know of it.
It was sold locally to me (Braeside, Ontario I think) then bought used in the early 50's by the guy I got it from.
He was a general contractor and it was used for lot prep. for homes and large commercial projects. (the town churches, school and arena to name a few) It was also used in the winter for skidding logs, plowing bush roads and pulling trucks up the big hills. (for winter use he cut holes in the center of the pads)
I bought it off his son last year after he died. Both he and his son wanted to see it fixed and used for work as apposed to being sent for scrap.

old-iron-habit, you are correct about the cables they are to isolate the roof from vibration and they apparently worked well.
2 are missing and replaced with exhaust tubing and the other 2 are rusted stiff and broken, I have some big cable to replace them when I get to the paint and bodywork.

facinating to look at your pictures and compare this machine to my late d4 30A (same as the 7U) built in late 1958 and notice the similarities and differences. Mine also has a cabe mounted canopy like the 7J which makes me think perhaps Cat fitted them at the factory like that. I note the brake levers with covers are different but the ram hose connections are the same. Can someone comment on the chronology of the 7us and J's and the similarities and differences please😊
