I have a 1940, D4 7J. When I start it, it misses on one cylinder and begins to fire on all 4 after a few minutes. When it is running on all 4, it has a "chirping" sound on one cylinder. I pulled the valve cover and all the valves seem it be operating. I loosened each injector tubing at the pump and each one drips and causes the engine to loose a little rpm. I'm also getting a little oil looking some out of the oil fill spout on the side........any thoughts?

What's the blowby like coming out of the crankcase breather? Sounds a lot like the cylinders and rings are well worn. I believe edb posted the only compresson test specs I have ever seen for CAT engines just a few days ago.

The other thing you should do is have the injectors checked or just take them out of the cylinders and mount them to the lines so they spray out on the ground or straight up. Then open the throttle and motor the main engine over with the pony and look at the spray pattern. Be careful, do not get fuel injected into your finger etc. If you do, go to the doctor!

The fuel diluted oil coming out the side (of the injector pump housing?) can be because the drain off line from the housing is crimped or has been routed back into the fuel line from the tank. Any fuel that leaks around the pump plungers should drain out onto the ground through that line.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

The "chirping" sound that I identify with is a leaking valve seat or valve that isn't completely closing.
