Got my Dad's old D4 going a couple of days ago. A lot of hard work research and help from ACMOC.
Had been waitng for a #2 fuel. Installed it, bled the system again using compressed air in the fuel tank. All looked good. I had also rewired the whole thing new amp gauge , drawing 28 amps on the glow plugs.
I was ready to try a start up.

Put hot water from the water heater into the engine to heat up the metal. Ran a hair dryer into the intake manifold for a few minutes. Air into the fuel tank.
one minute on the glow plugs. Just a smell of quick start.

Time to try a start. It fired up so quick it scared the hell out me maybe 1 and a half seconds.

Fuel pressure in the green, oil pressure good water temp after idleing for a while just fine.

This CAT has been sitting for ten years contaminated fuel system But this CAT is ready to prowl now.

Yours Patrick

thank you for all the help

That's great Patrick, congratulations. You can add an aftermarket coolant heater if you park near an electrical outlet. They make starting a breeze in any weather. I have a built-in one on the pickup diesel engine and the difference is night and day.

Awesome Patrick! Speaking of which, the Patrick Ranch event is coming up in Durham, CA; where are you and your CAT located? Come on out and show off your sleepy crawler if you can. The more the merrier.
Neil, it’s rare for anyone in my part of NorCal to have a block heater... even higher up, but I guess if he is in snow country and needed to fire up often, a great idea.
Patrick: pull the old girl out and share some more pictures please!
Thanks, JM

Added a gallon of hydraulic oil and the blade arms are working fine. Its raining today, will put blade back on when it dries out a bit and will send another photo.

glow plugs and either don't mix thanks for the heads up that makes sense. Will put the either away. With good clean filters and good fuel pressure I don't need it.

Sonoma County wine country is not exactly MN and I would never use the D4 till April.

Keep your hands clean and sing Happy Birthday (unless you are greasing the rollers)

thanks for the help

Patrick
