About three years ago I pulled the engine in my D4 5T apart due to a miss. I found the valves were in really poor shape, a few cracked rings and water had damaged the liners. From everything I had read on the forum, parts were not available from Caterpillar. I contacted Florin Tractor and was lucky to score three new liners and most of the gaskets. A friend had a cylinder head that had new valves however a few had rusted and were beyond use. I also picked up a set of rings, can't remember where.

I redid the head using the best valves and honed the best cylinder to reuse. Life happened until about three weeks ago and I got motivated to put the engine back together. So as luck would have it, when I start cleaning parts I find #4 rod is egg shape on the small end and the bushing is broken into three pieces.

Now I start looking for a replacement rod and was fortunate to find Gemdozer (great guy by the way) had a new one. I also needed a few more gaskets so, stopped by the local Cat dealer to order them. While I was there for kicks and giggles I asked the parts guy to check on a new liner and two exhaust valves.

To my surprise they were available! I've got all my parts now and hopefully will get it running this weekend.

I just wanted to pass on that parts are still available from Caterpillar on the D4400 engines and it pays to check. I was also pleasantly surprised at cost, liner was $115 and valves $35 each. I've probably got $1000 in parts now but should have a good rebuild when I'm done.

Well done on getting those parts organised, I have two D4400 motors here in Australia with the old liners out and new one's waiting to go in along with new piston rings and reconditioned heads, hopefully in the next few weeks I get it done, I agree that it is surprising what parts are still available off the shelf from the Cat Dealer including the gaskets, I also agree Florin Tractor and Gemdozer are great to deal with.

There is an official Cat Inc valve head protrusion chart for those Cat heads to check the valves sit high enough in the valve seats for maximum compression though if you are working with all new valves and the seats haven't been cut hard I assume you will be OK, when I took my motors apart I was shocked at how bad the liners, rings and valves looked considering how well the engines ran though they were hard to start when cold.

Look forward to seeing photo's of the finished motor.

My SOP is always to start with my Cat dealer and then what he doesn't have, I go to the other vendors. Rationale is that if Cat still sees some turnover in these items, it makes it more likely that they will continue to make them available.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
