Hi all! I got to work on my grandpas d4 some today. The tractor hasn't run in a long time and has gotten some water in the crankcase. What came out when I pulled the drain plug was pretty nasty looking. I filled the crankcase with 5 gallons of kerosene and used the pony engine to turn the main over. The kerosene did a nice job of flushing everything out.

The only thing that concerned me a little was that the kerosene would not pump up to the valves and the pressure never came up. I am hoping that this is just because the kerosene is mich thinner than oil. When looking through the inspection ports it looked like the main bearings were getting plenty of flow. I disconnected the line going up to the valves and had a little bit of flow there (see picture). I guess I will drain the kerosene out and put some fresh oil in and see what happens. You should be good to go with oil.

Might be worthwhile to pull valve cover off and check for oiling in the rockers. I would pour a quart over everything before you start. Make sure plenty goes down the pushrods onto the lifters and camshaft lobes. You can check valve clearance roughly by shaking all the rockers making sure none of them have excessive clearance from sticking valves.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

I had the valve cover off. That is how I know it wasn't getting anything to the valves. I probably should have put some oil on everything up there, but I didn't turn it much and certainly didn't try to start it.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
