Elpinstone machinery is or at least was made in Tasmania where I live, by Dale Elphinstone who sold out to Cat for several millions but cleverly kept the freehold on the factory etc. I believe Cat has now built a new factory in Asia and so the Tas factory will close due to the high cost of rent and labour. Dale has also wrangled a means by which he can make 'above ground' mining equipment here as opposed to 'below ground' mining equipment that the agreement with Cat prohibits.
Dale is one clever man to take on Cat. He is probably the richest man in Tas and has a collection of older Cats second to none including an immaculate D2 bought for a high price. I heard he and another wealthy Tasmanian wanted it at auction and naturally Dale won.
A bit of Tasmanian trivia👋
